Just started rereading Next Men as I bought the whole collection on digital.

This really is my favourite work by JB but even now, on my umpteenth reading I am noticing new things. Just subtle things like the skewed picture in Hilltop’s office in issue one that keeps popping up in backgrounds. Things like subtle body posture when Hilltop is leaning back in his chair.

And the different body types/faces are simply incredible

I really love this series and am so glad we finally got the conclusion we did. I think it may be my favourite comic.

It probably comes as no surprise to any JBF member in good standing that I
wholeheartedly agree with the sentiments James has expressed. I think JBNM
is incredibly underrated, not just as a part of JB's catalog, but as a series
period. (Is it blasphemy for me to consider JBNM a better story than
WATCHMEN? If so, brand me a heretic!)

Don't get me wrong; I love JB's work on the FANTASTIC FOUR. It truly is
second only to Jack and Stan's! And despite what even our host may claim, I
believe it is his work on UNCANNY X-MEN that is the second foundation upon
which was built that team's long-lasting popularity. JB also made me
appreciate the comic book Superman again. His BATMAN & CAPTAIN AMERICA
is among the greatest single comicbooks I've ever read! And don't even get me
started on…

Well, you get the point.

So much of JB's work is amazing that singling out a single series (ha) as the
best is high praise indeed, and JBNM is deserving of that praise!

Wallace and Petter - they're two different stories. Each is spectacular in its own venue... I believe you can love them both, even as you can also love "The Man of Steel" for its story.

You can assign one better than the other, but I couldn't pick one. I mean, yeah, "Desert Island Trade" could force me to select one... but I wouldn't try to compare 'em. They're both swell, and I leave it at that.

I don't think anyone was suggesting an either/or scenario.

Well, the statement of one being considered better than the other seemed to be such a comparison to me. 'Course, at my age, it's hard to tell up from down some days.

Which leaves some weird indentations on my ceiling. ;).

You really cannot image a scenario in which someone likes A more than B without actually disliking B?

I like Pepsi more than Coca-Cola without actually disliking Coca-Cola, Eric.

As for NEXT MEN, love it. Like a lot of our host's work, I feel there is merit in revisiting it.

When I become a billionaire and set up a production studio, I'm going to invite Mr Byrne to do a "director's commentary" on various issues, panel-by-panel. ;-)

Well, I didn't read it that way.... but sure, of course I can see it. Guess I saw it through my own lenses... I don't usually do comparisons that way. I like JBNM: I like "Watchmen"; I don't necessarily like one more than the other.

Ah, never mind. I'm old and cranky and disrupting the narrative. Just ignore me... :)

I definitely did not intend it as an either/or scenario.

I like WATCHMEN enough to have read my copy cover to cover at least three
times. It could have been shorter, and (SPOILER ALERT) I don't care for the
whole alien squid monster thing, but the art is wonderful and some of the
writing is quite engaging. I may have enjoyed WATCHMEN more if I hadn't
listened to everyone tell me how great it was before reading it. I was expecting
THE GREATEST COMICBOOK STORY EVER, and for me, it was far from that.

One reason I added the line about liking JBNM better than WATCHMEN is
that the latter is billed as "one of the most influential graphic novels of all time
and a perennial best-seller." So yeah... That thing that many people consider to
be among the greatest comicbooks ever produced…? I consider JBNM better
than that.

What Wallace said. I meant it as a compliment to JBNM, not a critique of WATCHMEN.
