Four from me: Go Now covered by the Moody Blues after Bessie Banks and Tainted Love by Soft Cell after Gloria Jones are so good they have become the definitive version. Gary Jules and Michael Andrews' reworking of Tears for Fears' Mad World and Muse's take on Feeling Good may not necessarily be seen as the definitive versions, but are definitely my favourites.

I've actually stumped people at trivia with Tainted Love. I'd wager the majority of people think Soft Cell's version is the original. Myself, I've known it wasn't for years, but didn't hear the original until a couple of years ago. Soft Cell's version is most definitely better.

Something I didn't know until recently: the actress in the video for Marilyn Manson's version of Tainted Love is Chyler Leigh...aka Alex on SUPERGIRL.

Another that occurred to me:

Without You by Harry Nilsson (vs Badfinger).

I reckon the same goes for Toni Basil's Mickey too. Not great but probably ranks as another better than original as well.

Rainbow`s Since You Been Gone is superior to Russ
Ballard`s original.
Ace Frehley`s New York Groove is superior to Hello`s
version also written by Russ Ballard.
Kiss`s God Gave Rock n Roll to You is superior to
Argent`s version.

I knew Gene and Paul added themselves to the credits, but I’ve never compared the two versions to hear the differences. Think I’ll do that later.

Gene and Paul mostly rewrote the lyrics to the first verse of 'God Gave Rock and Roll To You' which, in the original, are pretty silly.

(I swear these are real.)

Love your friend and love your neighbour
Love you life and love your labor
No it's never too late to change your mind
Don't step on snails, don't climb in trees
Love Cliff Richard but please don't tease
It's never too late to change your mind

Soft Cell's version is most definitely better.

Just listened to the original. Gotta disagree. I LOVED the original.

The Sisters of Mercy and the Mission both did a lot of covers on their singles.
The Sisters versions of Emma (Hot Chocolate) is haunting, especially the final scream. Their version of Gimme Shelter (Stones) is also very, very good with an added punch from the guitar.

The mission’s versions of ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’ (Beatles) and Wishing Well (Free) are also very powerful.

Gary Moore did a powerful version of Wishing Well too.

Oh god. I found the original on YouTube. It was a good choice to change "Kitty" to "Mickey". The original sounds like a cat food commercial.

I just heard the original Fleetwood Mac recording of "Landslide" for the first time in a long time. I think I like the Dixie Chicks version better, although the live version that Stevie Nicks recorded in the 90s is far superior.

James, I won't call it superior to the original, but if you liked Sisters of Mercy's cover of Gimme Shelter, check out Puddle of Mudd's version sometime. It is from an album of covers they did in 2011, and also has interesting versions of The Joker (Steve Miller Band), Everybody Wants You (Billy Squier) and All Right Now (Free). I like all of them, but none are better than the original. (I'll highly recommend avoiding their covers of Stop Draggin' My Heart Around and Old Man, though.)

Eric Clapton's covers of J.J. Cale's Cocaine and After Midnight are better than the originals.

UB40's version of Red Red Wine is better than Neil Diamond's.

Rage Against The Machine's version of The Ghost Of Tom Joad is better than Bruce Springsteen's.
