I don't know. I would prefer not 'updating' the 'outdated' references in dialogue, but I prefer that characters who are supposed to be human look that way...so go ahead and don't make black people look like 'lawn jockey' sculptures.

The thing is, comic books, like TV and radio programs,  film, and literature, represents the time within the work was created. These works serve a purpose for historical reference as much as entertainment. To ignore and rewrite that history seems wrong. Better to present the work, warts and all, with information to place it with the proper historical context.

If "Tom Sawyer" is adapted again in film, or as a TV show, or a comic, it is understandable to do so in a manner that eliminates some of the elements that do not reflect modern sensibilities in the name of being more enlightened and sensitive to how some characters portrayals are offensive.  But to alter the text of the original novel in later printings is literally rewriting history.

Ebony in THE SPIRIT looks AWFUL!  Visually, he's an offensive caricature.  BUT, as written, he's often heroic, has more sense than the white people around him, and is shown having depth of personality and character.  It's a peculiar dichotomy, but I want to see it, unaltered.
