William Hartnell played the First Doctor from 1963-66. He reprised the role in 1972 (THE THREE DOCTORS). Hartnell passed away in the mid-70s so Richard Hurndall played the First Doctor in THE FIVE DOCTORS (1983).

David Bradley will be playing the First Doctor in the upcoming Xmas special.

A lot of the complaints about Bradley (on social media) are about how little he looks like Hartnell. I remember similar complaints about Richard Hurndall back in the day.

How important is appearance, specifically a resemblance to William Hartnell?

You'll never find someone exactly like a person (although Helen Mirren did a good job playing Queen Elizabeth II in THE QUEEN). At the same time, it can be distracting when there's no resemblance. Does Anthony Hopkins look like Richard Nixon? I don't think he does.

I feel that Richard Hurndall looks more like William Hartnell than David Bradley does. At the same time, I will try to enjoy Bradley's performance as the First Doctor in the Xmas special.

Thoughts?

When made up to look like the First Doctor, Bradley does resemble Hartnell, much moreso than Richard Hurndall did(in 'The Five Doctors', it was more about the costume and 'Hartnellish' wig, as Hurndall was not expected to try to do an impression of Hartnell's voice or mannerisms(Hmm?) )

I'm with Brian. Bradley looks much more like Hartnell than Hurndall ever did.

After seeing Bradley play him in An Adventure in Space and Time, I'm sold.  And in that, he was playing Hartnell, not just playing the character that Hartnell played.

The one downside is he looks too tall, too big, slightly more overbearing in his physique compared to Hartnell who seemed far more slighter. Facially and mannerisms though are spot on for me.

I think Bradley is a close enough approximation that i
can enjoy his portrayal,Hurndall wasn`t even close to
me,even as a kid.
