Perhaps most famous, depending on your age, for the role of Higgins in MAGNUM, P.I.

Higgins managed the estate of unseen character, Robin Masters, the wealthy owner of the beachfront property in Hawaii. It was strongly implied that Higgins and Masters were one and the same; Higgins confessed it in the final episode, but then did claim to be joking. So who knows?

I remember his role as as defector kidnapped by a brainwashed gorilla in WONDER WOMAN

I saw many other roles. A solid and memorable actor.

EDIT: Incorrect information edited.

***

I thought the same as I hadn't seen him in anything in recent years, perhaps not even since the 90s.

A commanding presence in a small package.   While that Higgins / Masters Magnum credit is surely his most famous, I also think of a ton of smaller roles in big time seventies movies like PAPER MOON, CHINATOWN, HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER, THE NICKEL RIDE and BLAZING SADDLES.

I remember him most as the mob boss in THE LUCKY LADY, due to that being the first in-flight movie I ever experienced.

I was saddened to hear this...I very much enjoyed his work, particularly on
Magnum, being a big fan of the series. The chemistry of the cast was great
IMHO. I remember when I found out he was from Texas when I was younger
and quite surprised by it. I also read a report yesterday that he passed from
natural causes at 84...and thought "that's way too young". Condolences to his
family and friends.
