Michael beat me to the punch - This image alone makes me think BIG meets SUPERMAN.

And count me in with the group who thinks too much padding is too much. I much prefer the more subtle padding other heroes get. This looks like an expensive halloween costume, not something you fight in.

That being said, this is then a terrible choice to make as a first release photo since it would take minimal photoshop work to turn this into a scene wherein underaged Billy has used his "BIG-"style transformation to buy himself and his pal some alcohol from the local liquor store.

HAHA.....I already thought it DID portray that image, then I read your comment and went back to realize thats a case of Cola, not beer.

Just like the comics, they took a great costume (uniform) and completely messed it up. They've gone from timeless to awful.

Looks fine to me.  Certainly better than what they did to Superman.

They certainly could have adapted this version very easily -

And yet still recognizably Captain Marvel.

Look, I get it... do I wish he looked EXACTLY like he did in the original comics?  You bet!.  But I can live with this version... provided, of course, that the final product is a fun, modern, well-made interpretation of the comics.

They still have a long way to go, admittedly!

Much prefer the button flap shirt from the Golden era... it would look better in live-action too!! (I prefer how JB drew it with looser sleeves.)

Still bothers me that they totally revamped the character and he's referred to as Shazam!

The pictures of Levi in the outfit look like he's wearing a padded suit. It reminds me of some of the folks you see doing cosplay at conventions where they are wearing outfits with padded muscles and looks just as phony.

I a little worried about this one. Captain Marvel is one hero that really doesn't
have a dark side. I'm not sure how he would fit into the DC movie universe.

Now, I could see him on the Flash TV show very easily.

I don't think you've been paying attention, Paul. The current Billy is a cynical delinquent who cares for no one and nothing in this world, with a few small exceptions that begin to eat away at his tough-as-nails exterior. Now that he's been given the powers of a sorcerer, he's kicking ass and taking names, grinning like a maniac with lightning flashing from his eyes. The iterations before this one featured a mass-murdering Black Adam who tore heroes apart on-panel and a Mary Marvel in a black leather mini-skirt who was either corrupted by Black Adam's evil or alternately possessed by the sexually sadistic Desaad.

The Trials of Shazam series was a dark attempt to restart the mythos with Freddy taking over, proving himself to the gods who have manifested themselves on Earth as tattoo artists, convicts, et al. Billy is relegated to the role of the wizard sitting alone on the Rock of Eternity.

There have been sporadic attempts at a kid-friendly version of the character, but those haven't lasted long, nor were they incorporated into the rest of the DC line. Captain Marvel and the Shazam book hasn't been light-hearted in DC's mainstream continuity for decades now.

So am I, Paul. The Captain Marvel character should be, forgive the expression, a lightning rod for imaginative storytelling and good feelings. Unfortunately, the companies are psychologically and emotionally incapable right now of producing such material, and must therefore hammer every character and concept into the same hyper-violent, ugly shape regardless of history or potential. Captain Marvel is now just one more guy to stand around in the background of the next Infinite Crisis/Identity Crisis bloodbath.

Just watched the trailer. Points for not being DARK DARK DARK. And the costume change I can live with.

But clearly Billy's personality doesn't become more mature after he says the magic word. So it's not my Captain Marvel. (Then again, he's not even calling himself that anymore in the comics. He's "Shazam." Which is stupid.) So I won't be watching this, at least not until it's on HBO.

If for no other reason than that he can't say his own name.  How, I wonder, are people going to start calling that?  If anyone hears him say it, they'll know his secret identity.

Trailer looks awful.  The wisdom of Solomon is now the wisdom of a 13 year old.

I thought it looked GREAT. Showed it to my 12yo son who has no clue of who Captain Marvel or Shazam is and he is pumped to see it now too.

How about that, a DC superhero movie you could actually show to kids! The trailer seems to be going a little too far toward a goofy quality ó but after the DC movies we've had up until now, that's almost a breath of fresh air.

My hope is that over the course of this origin movie, Billy undergoes a character arc of learning to become more mature and responsible, beyond just this short teaser. And that would, of course, part of what the Captain Marvel character is really all about.

I think it looks... not for me... My Captain Marvel is by CC Beck and Otto Binder, just like many other people who are almost 90 years old.*

I hope the Harry Potter feel in the subway scenes is an indication WB is taking a cue from Marvel and giving future movies more district sub-genre tones, and not just lazily copying the most successful recent IP containing a train in their library.

*Just kidding; my Captain Marvel is by Jim Starlin.**

** Actually, my Captain Marvel is Michael Gray.

Hmmmm, that trailer is not too bad. I would rather see the wisdom of Solomon
but they seemed to get the costume fairly close and over-all it seemed kid
friendly.
I agree with what others have said, calling him Captain Marvel makes a lot
more sense then him being unable to say his own name.

I'm no expert in Captain Marvel lore but it's pretty clear it wasn't meant to be this. When Batson transforms he also acquires wisdom, etc, it's not a 13 year old kid with super powers.

Also, Zachari Levi is horribly miscast. A John Cena/Dave Bautista type would've made a lot more sense and be actually funnier if you're going for comedy.

This looks more like a "Captain Marvel clone Mark Millar concept" than the actual Captain Marvel.

I remember a negative review of Roy Thomas's 1986 miniseries sneering at the letters that appeared in latter issues unironically thanking DC and Thomas for bringing back the "the real" Captain Marvel: "Maybe they're big fans of the costume?"

This doesn't even really have the costume.

My son and daughter, 10 and 8, went nuts over this trailer. Looking forward to it.

So, Iíve not really read much Captain Marvel and this may be a stupid question. Was CM always just Billy in a grownup body like Tom Hanks in BIG?

No, he wasn't.

Didn't grab me at all. I'll eventually catch it on cable.
