Daredevil showed up as a guest star in a few issues, but was never considered a 'non-member' of the 'non-team'. (Wow, a triple negative! Nobody never uses none of those.)

If the Defenders spend a lot of time dealing with the supernatural....how about Blade as a member?

So my Defenders line-up (with a slant towards the spooky) would go something like...

Dr. Strange
Damion Hellstrom
Hellcat
Valkyrie
Nighthawk
Blade

Did Hawkeye ever stick around more than an issue or two? It was a good fit when he hung out with the Thunderbolts, and it would have been fun seeing someone who bristled at being a team player in the Avengers having to whip a ragtag bunch of heroes into shape.

Blade is an inspired choice.

Omega the Unknown, provided it would have brought Steve Gerber back to THE DEFENDERS (no longer possible, sadly).

The story of Omega the Unknown was actually wrapped up in the Defenders, issues 76 & 77 by writer Steven Grant.

Yellowjacket became a member in issue 23 and recurred occasionally thereafter.

DD was pivotal in their battle against the Grandmaster in G-S Defenders 3, but did not stick around to join the non-team. He turned up again when the Mandrill and his Femforce recruited Val and Patsy in issues 90 & 91.

Nonetheless, being a member of the Defenders is a little like being a Companion of the Doctor. The definition of who counts and who does not changes from fan to fan. There are fans who are steadfast that Richard Nixon was a Companion. He traveled with the Doctor in the Tardis, didn't he? Well, there y'go.

Oh, and Robbie, Lyra was a one-time character appearing in a Marvel black and white magazine created by Stan Lee and John Romita. Her future world of Femizonia was later used by Roy Thomas as the backstory for his creation, Thundra. I thought she'd help offset the odd weakness they'd written for the Valkyrie that she'd become powerless in battle against another woman. I don't know if that's still a thing with the character, but for a while, she could go toe-to-toe against Marvel's biggest and baddest and then get whupped by Aunt May because she couldn't raise her hand against a female foe. The 70's were weird.

Here's Lyra on the cover of the John Romita sketchbook...

If I recall correctly, her one appearance was later reprinted in the Fireside Superhero Women collection.

Brian, I had not thought about Lyra of the Femizons for years and for some reason remembered it a month or so ago and how much I loved the art. Last week while going through some old stuff in my father's basement I found a copy of Superhero Women and it has Lyra's story in it. The art was as great as I remembered.

My choice for a Defender (now that I have Superhero Women on the brain) is Medusa.

Longshot. He's a character who didn't fit in the X-Men, and would never fit in the Avengers.

Shane, good call on Magik, especially for the later-era, supernatural-heavy Defenders by J.M. DeMatteis. The team could all hang out with her in what used to be Ororo's home and garden in Limbo and defend her realm from Belasco, Dormammu, and a return of the Six-Fingered Hand.

Dusty, nice White Tiger there.

Michael, as I sometimes say, serendipity is a working force in the universe and I'm not.

IIRC,, Steves Engelhart and Gerber had a tug of war over who could use Yellowjacket back in the day. I think Englehart won.
