Since the original Avengers had five members, I'm going to pick five:

Vision
I know these guys aren't Earth's "mightiest" heroes, but I really enjoyed them
in this comic...
The Hulk seems a kinda small on that cover, but as a kid, I never noticed!

I think 6-7 active team members works well, but having ready to call reservists is a big part of the team, so...
Active Captain America. Chairman. Just doesn't feel like the Avengers without him. Wasp Hank Pym (Whichever version fits the story) Captain Marvel (Monica Rambeau) Hawkeye Black Knight Hercules

I'm really loving everyone's picks and find some of the choices really interesting. I think some of these teams would be a really fun roster to read about like Wallace's and Robbie's choices. That's a lot of ego, Robbie. I note some of these lists are quite similar to my own and wonder if we started reading Avengers around the same time, as those line-ups are all very close to the first one I was exposed to. (Although many of those characters have mostly been Avengers for the vast majority of their appearances like Hawkeye, Hank Pym, Wasp, Vision, Scarlet Witch, and Vision.)
I noticed none of the lists, so far, have included Hulk even though he was an original member and an important part of the Avengers movie, which brought him back into the Avengers in the comics as well. I wonder if that is because for most of us who missed those first few issues of Avengers and grew up reading the book in the seventies and eighties that Hulk was more of a Defenders member to us.
One of the things I love about the Avengers is that you can have a whole range of different teams as long as you have Captain America (or even Iron Man) in the leadership/veteran role, from Cap's Kooky Quartet to the Avengers team during Roger Stern's run (which remains my favorite run of the title despite not being my favorite roster). That Stern team was very eclectic with Namor, Starfox, She-Hulk, Captain Marvel, Black Knight, and Doctor Druid, but it still absolutely works as the Avengers team despite having only one original member during much of its run in Captain America (although in some issues Thor, Wonder Man and Scarlet Witch and Vision were also in the roster, it was in more of a reservist role if memory serves).
I also noticed none of the lists so far have included Wolverine and Spider-Man. :)

Hulk hates poker!")
