And I don’t think Gerry thought it was funny at all. I remember him being quite upset about it.

Wow. I know Stroman probably felt justified because the fan threatened to out him, but that's a really crap move and I'm betting he's someone that really needs commissions to make a living so he's likely only hurt his own future revenue stream by pulling that. And if his website says there's only an 8 week waiting period, the fact a fan was upset that it's taking him more than a year seems pretty justified (especially if he paid up front).

-----

I think you are conflating some things. The length of time the fan was waiting was never specified.

Also, the stick figure isn't the commission. It was just a snarky response to being told by the fan that he is "being put on blast". He's apparently still finishing up the commission.

I think the professional thing to do, if the client is being abusive, is just to refund any money (if taken), apologize, and part ways.

Here's the drawing. To be fair, it does sound like he intends to eventually honor the commission. Which is weird to me, because his relationship with the customer seems to have become openly hostile since the joke drawing was received.

This is not very good customer relations,it would be
good practice to give a realistic delivery time, and if
not able to adhere to it,to keep the customers
informed. In this day of emails, there is no excuse. If the
customer gets irate, suck it up and offer a refund of the
deposit.

Brian, well, seeing it again, my memory of the Dr. Strange commission was obviously lacking, not stick figures, but definitely not worth the 500 bucks he paid either. Very unprofessional on Golden's part. I actually saw that posted somewhere else and there was no mention of the money spent or how upset Gerry was. All of this predates my joining the forum so I never got the full story on it til now. Reading that thread now, it looks like JB generously offered to do a commission for him as well so Gerry didn't come out too bad in that exchange. Bad Byrne indeed.

Michael, I guess I assumed the guy had been waiting more than a year for the Stroman piece based on this in the initial post in this thread: "judging by the comments on this posts, waits of more than a year are not uncommon.." But if he is still going to do the actual commission, looks like he's getting two for the price of one, albeit one that's a bad joke. Although if the guy isn't a fan anymore after this exchange, I  agree that just refunding the money might be preferable.

Edit: Reading the end of that thread I see that a resolution was reached between Golden, his agent, and Gerry.

Out of all the commissions I've done, I've only had one very negative experience with a customer. But they were very particular and in hindsight I should have recognized their nature by the way they inquired about the work. I've never had to refund money, though.

Otherwise, it has been great. Only a couple revisions that I recall. And the work was received well.

In regard to this discussion, I think that customer deserves a refund.

I ordered a Sal Buscema commission in 2013 that took over 7 months to arrive. His dealer was up front at the time of the order that it could take awhile.

It was totally worth the wait. Love it. Still have it framed and hanging on my wall.

Sal included a personal note on a sticky apologizing for the wait. A real pro.
