150 years ago today the US finalized the deal to buy and take possession of Alaska from Russia for the bargain price of $7.2 million.

Best real estate deal ever I'd say!

Back in junior high, our history teacher posed an interesting "what if". Namely, what if the US had not gained possession of Alaska, but had succeeded in taking over British Columbia. Then, during the Cold War, the United States and the Soviet Union would have had a common border!

What an interesting question!

It does make you think about what little and big occurrences that might have led to.

Speaking of Alaska, I read once that there aren't any counties in that state. Most bizarre. Isn't Louisiana also a state that lacks counties?

Louisiana does have counties, they just call them "parishes." This goes back to the state's French political heritage.

And Alaska is divided into 'boroughs', which in their case are essentially the same as other states' counties.
