This Kirby-centric weekend has me reviewing some of my intersections with his characters, and DAMN I miss this series. I've not at any time felt that I was fully up to the job of filling Jack's big boots, but here I came closest. I could have stayed on JK4W for a long time, if only circumstance would have permitted. Life is full of paths not taken, but the ones that I resent are the ones I was PREVENTED from taking.

I can understand the mindset behind the last sentence of your post, Mr Byrne.
Thank you for what you did do on the series.

In my opinion, you and Walt are the only creators that should be allowed to even write and draw the Fourth World saga and I would have loved to have gotten more. I'm a fan of Starlin's older work, but his Death of the New Gods was an abomination.

JB, it was through your work that I was first introduced to the Fourth World characters. I instantly took to them, and it made me seek out Kirby's original - which I rank among his finest work.
I would definitely have loved to see you do more Fourth World.

Well, the New Gods are mostly all back to the way they were before Starlin's series and then the New 52 reboot, so at least we don't "need" to complain anymore about what happened to them.
(For a brief while before the reboot the term "Fifth World" was being used, right after Final Crisis. I don't know if that's still the case, not that I really care.)
P.S. My edit was to change "Stalin" to "Starlin" -- I don't think Jim's crimes are quite that huge!

Your 4th World stuff is easily one of my top ten Byrne projects. Those ten switch places depending on when I read them last.

Your writing, plotting and art were flat out perfect on JKFW. If not for Generations, this would be my favorite of all your DC work. Time to pull these out for a read again.

The artwork for that series was just amazing. There was so much detail packed into each page.

I loved your work on JKFW (and enjoyed the backup stories as well). I wish you could have stayed on too.
