... rushed to the hospital Sunday night after he was found unconscious, not breathing and in full cardiac arrest ... after Petty got to the hospital he had no brain activity and a decision was made to pull life support.

Condolences to his family, friends and fans.

-C!

Sad to hear. I can't think of a Tom Petty song I didn't like.  Always tuneful and his videos were always clever and gave a twist on the song.  We need as many old rockers as we can hold onto these days.

Saw him in concert twice and got to meet him and the band backstage once. Heck of a nice guy when I met him, took time to talk to everyone in our group and hung out with us far longer than he probably should have. My condolences to his family and friends.

This sucks. I've been a Petty fan since the mid-80s. Also, he passed exactly how my wife did in May. My condolences to his family and the band.

Choking back tears... Petty's voice, songs & lyrics had a major impact on me over the years ("Wildflowers" probably being my all-time favorite album of his).  He should have been around for much longer.

RIP

This is heartbreaking (no pun intended) news! Genuinely shocked and saddened by this.

FUCK!!!!

FUCK. FUCK. FUCK.

One of my all-time favorites.  You couldn't live in Gainesville, FL for more than a heartbeat without becoming a fan.  Powerful music from a one-of-a-kind artist.

This day can end now.  Please.

I'm sorry to do this, but CBS and Variety are reporting that the death is unconfirmed whilst the likes of NY Daily News is reporting he has died.

Social media muddies the waters further. Who on earth do we believe?

If he has passed, my condolences, of course. Just seeing contradictory reports.

Very sad. Tom Petty was the last person I saw in concert, back in Chicago in 2014.

Brain death is death. His body is on auto-pilot now, but Tom has left the building.

Goddammit. A master who made simplicity so fucking complex.

Thank you, Tom. For the endless hours of joy, pain, love and regret. Thank you

If you asked me to list bands and artists no longer with us that I wish I had gotten to see in concert, Tom Petty would be near the top of the list. Probably third or fourth place.

Been a fan since I first saw the video for You Got Lucky waaaay back when I was a kid and MTV actually showed music videos instead of mostly inane tv shows.

"You Got Lucky" is easily my favorite Petty song. The most heartbreaking song by the Heartbreakers.

Goodbye, Tom.

At one time, I wanted a hat like the one he wore in the video for You Got Lucky.

And it's my favorite song by him, too. With Into The Great Wide Open and Free Fallin' close behind.

So sad. And right after I really got into the Wilburys.
