So, Disney bought Marvel and Star Wars. Dark Horse promptly lost the Star Wars license and Marvel started publishing Star Wars titles.
So how come IDW is also publishing Star Wars? And Disney characters, for that matter. I'd've thought they'd give the rights to Marvel.
There's probably a simple answer to all this; it just doesn't seem to make sense to me, is all.

Probably a question of brand management and audience segmentation. Disney has long ruled the roost when it comes to selling product to young girls, but has historically had a bit of a gap with teen boys. When they acquired Marvel it was a very nice fit, with Marvel's demographic nicely plugging that hole.
As I understand it, the Marvel SW comics are pitched at that traditional male, adolescent segment, whereas the IDW SW comics are aimed at a younger, broader segment. It's possible that Disney doesn't want to muddy the water with its Marvel brand by having it associated with 'kiddy' products -- which is kind of sad if true, given Marvel and superhero comics are synonymous, and superhero comics should be for kids.

I`m surprised Disney hasn`t grabbed the Marvel licence
from Universal Studios in Florida...yet!

Peter's answer sounds logical.
Still surprising, though, I'd have thought Disney/Marvel would have kept a "tight leash" on anything STAR WARS-related.
These things happen, though. From 1990-1992, Marvel UK published a STAR TREK: TNG comic - which reprinted issues of *DC COMICS* late 80s TNG title. Not quite the same, but at the time it felt bizarre to see a Marvel UK title reprinting stuff from their biggest competitor.

Marvel doesn't know how to do all ages books?! IDW does a lot of kids books IDW branding fits Disney products better.
Disney is always happy to licence products and get free money. If Universal is a better ROI than developing something in the Disney parks

It's likely too expensive to buy Universal out. Walt Disney World has been trying to work within the loopholes of using characters not being used by Universal, like Guardians of the Galaxy.

I disagree. It's about risk mitigation, which Disney is all about. A little more than a year ago, they shut down their profitable Disney Infinity video game, because growth was slow, and they wanted to get out of publishing video games in-house.
They did not acquire Marvel to get into the comic publishing business. It's an IP factory. So with their non-Marvel properties, what's the point in trying to be a publisher in a struggling market when they could license it to someone else?

The zero-risk model of licensing out their IP is a good point and I'm sure it factored into their decision to use IDW. Not sure it explains why they are publishing some SW titles through Marvel though.

I suspect that would have more to do with control over the property under Lucasfilm's "Everything from this point on is canon" approach.

I bet its as simple as the Darkhorse contracted agreement reached it's expiration date while the DWG has not. Disney opted not to renew.
