Peter,

Watch out!!! The last time I tossed Atlas into a conversation, I got chewed out.....

The fact that Erik Josten already possessed super-human strength, then given the Pym growth serum should allow him to stay matched with the Hulk for a while.

If Hank Pym/Clint Barton are lifting cars/trucks with the serum, imagie what Erik could do?

..just sayin'......    :-)

"What's our range, here? Characters like Galactus and
Eternity are not normally rated for strength, but theirs
would be nearly infinite."

I just have to point out how much it tickles me that
even after X years as a pro, JB still seems to be into
these kinds of fun fan discussions.

1. Hulk
2. Ben

But I pretty much acknowledge nothing Marvel has done in the last 25 years. So don't take my word for it.

Hyperion is it for me.  He's Marvel's version of Superman before Gladiator was created, though I definitely put Gladiator #1 in best hair!

Strength seems so hard to define at times.

It's like, do we include those whose strength isn't physical? What I mean is, Dormammu could probably use his magical abilities to help him lift a rock that is really big. But is that really strength? If I used a magic spell to help me lift a bus in the air, well it doesn't really make me strong; it simply means I've used magic as a "tool" to lift the bus.

Yet if I had a friend, who was a bodybuilder, and he lifted a bus in the air, well that's proper strength, not reliant on magic or anything external.

There's some attempt at logic in the nonsense I've typed above...

You're right of course that it is very difficult to compare apples with apples, but isn't this covered, at least to some degree, by the stricture in post #1 that we are to consider only physical strength?

Where do 'giants' like Giant-Man or Goliath (Pym versions) fall in the strength realm?

Not as strong as Hulk?

Stronger than Colossus?

Hey, has anyone ever considered what would happen if Hulk was given a dose of Pym particles for growth?

How strong does a giant, 40 foot tall Hulk get?!

I love these kinds of questions. If we are talking about super-beings generally confined to the Earth, but excluding the Hulk, there would still be a lot of choices.

As far as contest between Thor and Hercules in pure strength, I would call Hercules. But if Thor were allowed to use all his powers and weapons, Thor would win hands down.

I have come to respect Namor over the years, more than I did when I was younger. I am unsure if anyone can beat him in pure strength when under water, so he may be second to none in that environment.

When you start adding villains like Atlas, this changes things a lot. He was already ionic before his growth, so his strength levels would probably be incomparable to other earthbound beings. He would probably only be second to beings like the Living Pharaoh (when enhanced to gigantic proportions).

These are the questions I love! So much better than discussing sales and salaries and other stuff that has nothing to do with the enjoyment of the books!!

And now we come to the fly in the ointment. The whole questions is rendered moot as long as any writer can handle the characters in any what that serves the story but not the characters themselves.

It's a shame more don't think that way.

I just enter my "childhood mode" during such discussions. I want to know if Juggernaut would survive a collision with Destroyer. I want to know if Dormammu's magic would affect Galactus. I want to know if a well-prepared Batman can defeat a tired Spider-Man.

Great discussions!
