Since Hulk is #1, Hercules should get the #2 slot. Being a demigod certainly doesn't mean he can't be stronger than a "full" one. Does Marvel even treat Hercules as a demigod? (By the by... In Greek mythology, Heracles was elevated to full god status.)

I would say namor underwater. He's beaten the thing there and I can't recall him ever being overpowered while in the sea

He's also beaten the Hulk.

I'm rooting for Hercules to edge out Thor in terms of brute strength. It gives Herc some bragging rights and this way he won't be outclassed in all things by Thor. Thor has other powers so he could be the most powerful overall, but brute strength? Give Hercules some love.

Gladiator. Wasn't he supposed to be the equivalent of Superman?
---
I considered Gladiator, but what we see as his physical might is in part a manifestation of telekinesis, right? When he hit Ben, that was more than just a regular punch! (How Colossus took more than a single blow from Gladiator before going down is beyond me.)

Agreed, Robert. Thor is more powerful, but not quiiite as strong.

I'd put a wet Namor in a class with a mad Hulk since both their strength limits are very ambiguous and fluctuate greatly depending on their catalysts. So I volunteer to ban both....ha.
But when it comes to constant, non-variable (except for normal adrenaline), un-augmented brute strength, Hercules is the man.

I think you could make the case that all their strength limits are vaguely defined.Thor has been beaten unconscious by his own hammer, but Thor himself has never been able to knock the Hulk out with mjolnir. Juggernaut is unstoppable, but he is stopped every single story. The magic doesnt spell out if he gets stronger.
If the Juggernaut was trapped in an adamantium cage, would the magic that makes him unstoppable increase his strength to the point that he could break adamantium, or would the magic cause the molecular bonds of the adamantium to break down? It's never clearly been defined. Is he unstoppable for even a millisecond, or only permanently unstoppable but short- term stoppable?

You are right of course, Marc. So in the end it's up to the whim of the writer.
Now, If I was the writer.......

ITEM: Mr. Byrne, your point is excellent. I don't know how to phrase it to restrict Galactus and Eternity, but to include Silver Surfer and Gladiator (for example.) My intent was to include gods, cosmics, and villains... but not really trans-human or conceptual entities. I guess that would be my restriction, but if you can phrase it better, I will gladly accede to your superior experience!
ITEM: Peter Martin, I am restricting the Hulk solely because, as noted, if enraged enough, he might be sufficiently strong enough to outmuscle Galactus. I think his level is too vague, too undefined - so I figured that I just wanted to avoid that discussion altogether. (It might make a good topic though... "How strong COULD the Hulk get?")
ITEM: Robbie P., I did not state who my number 1 is. I ALSO didn't want, "Eric says Sentry is #1 (for example only), so am I right or wrong?" I just wanted to see what y'all thought and explain why you chose who you did (for those of you capable of doing so.) And my only contention is that I think Thor is stronger than Hercules. Of course, I have my own bias... as everyone does, which I'm interested in finding out.
ITEM: Gladiator - oh yes, him. I think that, while Gladiator's power is telekinetically based, I have never seen it manifested except as strength. I don't think of Sue Richards or Jean Grey as super strong, even though they might be able to lift more than, say, Spider-Man. So yes, Gladiator is in the running. (And the Invisible Woman and Phoenix are not. :)

I would say the Thing is the second-strongest, just going by the idea that the more a character specializes in a power, the more powerful he is at it. The Hulk is stronger than the Thing because he's even more specialized in super-strength. You know that because he's stronger at the cost of having less intelligence. The Thing can repair and pilot vehicles up to and including space ships, which another power.

I'd say Atlas (i.e. Erik Josten, formerly Goliath and Power Man).
