There are two things I appreciate about TOS.

Firstly, in the TOS movies, the landing parties wore thick coats on some planets when beaming down. It makes sense. Obviously, there will be planets that are colder than others. Those TNG uniforms looked perfect if you're landing on a sunny planet, but pretty useless if the planet is as cold as Siberia.

Secondly, I much prefer the designation "landing party" to "away team". The designation "away team" reminds me of football (soccer) where a commentator will say something like, "The team playing away has lost the homefield advantage." Landing party sounds much better.

Thoughts?

I had a similar discussion with the Keepers of Trek. I had Kirk order the landing party to adjust the temperature of their uniforms for comfort on a cold planet. I pointed out that he'd done the same in "Spock's Brain". A clever moment in an otherwise awful episode.

This, tho, made the heavy coats redundant -- or further evidence of the technological crash that happened between the series and the movies.

For me, the heavy coats were enjoyable on a cosmetic level (I wanted to own one!).

Of course, without the coats, where would the away team carry everything? Not as if those uniforms have pockets! (And yes, I'm fasceting... ;)

They needed coats. And pouches. And lots of leather straps. They needed to be 90s Rob Leifeld characters. THAT'S how you do it right! :P

They needed to be 90s Rob Leifeld characters.

Or as they were in the early Gold Key comics.

No version of TREK has really taken fully advantage of the transporter, but when I was a teen, watching TOS for the first time, I was very aware of when additional equipment was beamed down to the landing party. In "Miri", for instance. It seemed an elegant explanation of why they did not beam down with backpacks and utility belts. As long as they had their communicators, they could call down anything they needed.
