Today marks thirty years since adventure game show KNIGHTMARE debuted on UK TV:

The show is a virtual reality game show. Hosted by Dungeon Master Treguard, four contestants enter Knightmare Castle - and must perform a quest. One of the contestants becomes "blind" when a helmet is placed over him/her; the other three contestants must guide him/her through various rooms, encountering friend and foe. The "blind" contestant has a knapsack/food which represents "lifeforce".
Guided by but never totally helped by the Dungeon Master, the group must navigate all sorts of hazards, such as floors that open up, goblins, riddles, etc. Along the way, the helmeted one has various spells that can be used and other means of defeating evil; some of the characters he/she met on the way were allies.
Today it might look antiquated, but at the time, it was cutting edge. Thirty years ago, how many virtual reality game shows were there? It was gripping. You felt for the contestant at times when he'd fail to answer a riddle and would be eaten up by a stone creature; at other times you'd be on the edge of your seat as falling debris got very close to "killing" the contestant - on quite a few occasions it did, but at other times, his co-contestants guided him to victory.
By 1994, the novelty had probably worn off - and the impressive virtual reality sequences had probably been eclipsed by other special effects. In its prime, though, it was must-see TV (for me, anyway!) and it did spawn a lot of merchandise: books, computer games, etc.
Anyone else remember the show?
