Barely a whiff of King's original story in there. And those novels represent my favorite fictional world and journey. Yet somehow the film was still beyond entertaining and funky. Go figure.

The good: Itís fun. Performances are great. The cosmology is well presented.  The action is great.

The bad:  Too small in scope for an epic.  A lot of the changes were entirely arbitrary and didn't add anything. The characters were mostly there intact, but changes that were made regarding backstory/motivation weren't good for the overall story.  The Tower itself is pretty much completely offstage, which seems like an odd idea.

Budget of the film and timeframe of the story (feels like the whole thing happens over a couple of days) also robs the story of scope - which, presumably, they could add to if they got a sequel (which they ain't gonna, but, anyway).

Thanks Dave -- re-read The Gunslinger in preparation for the movie.  I read that and Drawing of the Three, and I'm currently on Wastelands.  Enjoyiing the re-read, and for the first time ever my wife has decided to read The Gunslinger to find out what all my Dark Tower fixation is about (and she's REALLY enjoying it, to her surprise and my delight).

Hope to catch the movie this weekend (obviously didn't catch it opening weekend).

I'm pretty hyped, despite the fact that it's not THE story Stephen King told verbatim.  As one review I read said:  "We do not watch Stephen King movies with our brains. We watch Stephen King movies with our hearts."

:-)

I knew I was out when I saw the first poster featuring Idris Elba. The books have two primary characters: the Gunslinger and the Man in Black. So they decide to dress the Gunslinger all in Black. Making the Man in Black the Other Man in Black.

That just seems like such a fundamentally dumb decision that I question any other decisions the creative team would make.
