The first season of this was recently added to Hulu and I've watched the first few episodes and have to say they are really entertaining. I was a big fan of the Douglas Adams' Dirk Gently books (especially the first one) and although it seems like the show is only really using the title character from the books and making up totally new stories, I still find myself enjoying it quite a bit. Probably more than if they'd try to do a straight up adaptation of the two novels.

Anyone else watching this?

Didn't care for the books, so no interest in this!

I enjoyed it, but I never read any of the Dirk Gently books, so I have no idea how well they adapted the character.

Something about the series appeals, ever so slightly, but like Mr Byrne, I didn't care for the books.

Unless you just didn't care for the main character, you might still enjoy it, JB. Since it's just telling its own stories it won't be adapting the second book which Adams seemed to borrow from his own Doctor Who work.

Michael, the holistic assassin bit cracks me up. I don't believe she was in the books at all.

Have you watched any of it yet, Robbie?

No, I thought about it - due to liking the footage I saw - but as I didn't care for the books, it feels like a chore to attempt to watch it.

I think you'd enjoy it even if you didn't enjoy the books. There's quite a bit of new stuff added as far as characters go (Dirk having an assistant, played by Elijah Wood, and the holistic assassin are great additions) and the stories are totally new as far as I can remember.

Don't do that!

Apologies, sir. For all I know you might also not like it at all. My point was just that other than it has a character named Dirk Gently who's a holistic detective, I'm not finding a lot in the show that I remember from either book.

There's definitely some loss of quality from Adams early work in the original trilogy of Hitchhiker's books to the latter Hitchhiker books and Dirk Gently. While I still enjoyed the Dirk Gently books and So Long and Thanks for All the Fish, I didn't enjoy them as much as I did the original trilogy. And Mostly Harmless was just depressing.

Matt, I'm still making my way through the first season, but I'm finding it refreshingly original despite the fact it's (at least in the titular character) adapted from Douglas Adams' material. I'm glad to hear that it's getting a second season.

I didn't know there was a UK version, Bill. The version I watched on Hulu was produced and originally shown on the BBC so I assumed that was the UK version. I know you guys have some stuff on Netflix that we have on Hulu. TV rights from country to country are strange. I wasn't aware there was any other version of Dirk Gently.

One Adams' adaptation I really did not enjoy was the most recent movie version of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. (I did enjoy the old BBC mini-series though.) Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy has been one of my favorite books since I first read it at 13 and that movie version was just awful.

It's the first book that's a hodge-podge of two Doctor Who scripts, the second (and partial third) are original material.

All credit to Douglas, I don't think any other author could have plagarized himself (auto-plagarism?) so blatantly and made it work so well.   He was a legendary procrastinator and I suspect his most inspired work was written under the pressure of having to pay the advance from his publisher back.   Yanking two of his old Doctor Who scripts out of the bin at the last minute and twisting a story around them was pure genius!

Shane, the Netflix version which I assumed was the subject
of this thread featured Elihah Wood,it started off ok,but
quickly became tedious in my opinion . The UK version
starred Stephen Mangan.
