I don't think the decision to stay behind with his fellow soldiers was as tough as it is made out to be. He came from a highly decorated military family. Some argue that if he did anything less he would have been ostracized.
He was also a bit of a scumbag. When he got back home, he found out that his wife had been in a bad car accident. He admitted to cheating on her on numerous occasions and eventually married the daughter of a wealthy beer distributor.

Doesn't take long for 'But he's still an asshole' to override 'Let's express good wishes to someone we may not like who has cancer.'

Yeah, Brian, I was wondering how long that would take. I don't wish cancer on anyone, and I don't make light of their situation if they have it. But sometimes, when someone is brought (further) into the public spotlight, it means that they're a bigger target. I think that's too bad.

Sorry, I thought we were giving our opinion on the man.
My feeling is that a politician who wants to capitalize on his fame should be ready to take the criticism as well.
Personally, I think he should retire. The guy is 80 years old and still trying to cling to power.

I figure that since JB deliberately worded his post to avoid using a term like 'scumbag', then perhaps that sort of comment can be left for...well, just about every other place on the internet that discusses politics.

I normally don't bother to comment on political nonsense on this forum.
But really - how many different flavors of ignorant or naive do you have to be to say something that stupid?
Granted, many of McCain's positions, decisions and voting record are fair game for criticism. But digging on a young naval officer who refused to abandon his fellow serviceman in that nightmare. Especially when he had a chance to leave.
How disconnected from reality are you??

No question his decision to stay was admirable. My point was that it would have been harder for an ordinary serviceman to stay.

I wish him well.
I voted for him in the Republican primary when he ran against George W, Bush. That was the only Republican primary I've ever voted in.

McCain sure can talk up some pretty words... but never walks the walk.

Yeah I'm a long way removed from it (thanks to this country's marvelous National Health Service) but I am appalled at the way that the Affordable Health Care Bill is being destroyed over there.

I don't wish cancer on anyone, including McCain, but I won't mourn his passing.
Apart from doing the honorable thing in Vietnam, his career has been marked by his volatility and opportunism that more than once verged into criminal misbehavior (Keating Five).
He wouldn't have gotten into Annapolis without his famous father pulling some strings, and he crashed two jets with no repercussions.
Now he's voting in favor of bills that he must know objectively will cost many of his own voters their insurance.
I'm sorry-- I know many consider him a great man. I'm not one of them.
