I'd call that one a Must See, even if you end up hating it.

Thanks JB & Petter.

As a troubling war movie, how does it compare to Deer Hunter?

Two very, very different movies. But I think that FMJ is superior. The boot camp section is like a movie in itself, and in my opinion it represents Kubrick's finest work.

Yes. FULL METAL JACKET is required viewing for a list like this. Definitely on top, for me. Lee Ermey is a force of nature.

My others:

AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN
CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER
STRIPES
STARSHIP TROOPERS

FULL METAL JACKET is alone at the top for me. I would fill out a top 5 with STRIPES, AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN, THE DIRTY DOZEN and PRIVATE BENJAMIN, in no particular order.

FMJ revision  ( no particular order)

Renaissance Man
Private Benjamin
The first half of Stripes
FMJ
GI Jane

Thanks for the recommendations and encouragement to see it at least once.

As an aside as far as Battle movies, it didn't bother me as  much as "Dear Hunter" or "Glory", but it was really captivating as a movie.

Put my list together before looking at others and seems Brian and Peter pretty much got there before me:

An Officer and A Gentleman
Starship Troopers
Captain America: The First Avenger
Full Metal Jacket
Dog Soldiers
