I'm not the type of person who enjoys associating with large groups of people. I prefer a smallest of inner circles. In order to keep my inner circle within my comfort zone. I have come up with certain ways of judging who I let in and who stays on the outside.

I use movies as one of those ways. I think you can tell a lot about a person. From the types of films that they like to see. I have a few films I ask if they've seen. Or would be willing to see.  Based upon their reactions and or willingness to watch the film. I can make a determination about how close I let them get.

These are some of the films.

The Phantom of the Opera (1925). There willingness to sit through a silent film means a lot to me.

King Kong (1933)

American Werewolf in London

Animal House

The Rocky Horror Picture Show

The Jolson Story

If they like them all. I know that we can get along.

I wonder do any of you do something like this ? If so what films do you use?

Movies are good, tho my ultimate litmus test -- especially for the ladies -- is my house. Those who can wander thru and not start measuring shortest escape routes -- well, those are the ones I happily number among my closest friends.

Anthony, with the exception of THE JOLSON STORY (haven't seen) and PHANTOM '25 (which I've seen), I own everything else on your list...

Let me grab my coat!

And to follow-up, I don't really use any kind of movie litmus test like that, but the closet example for me was back in 1994... I dated a girl for a only a few months, but our first date movie (which she suggested) was IN THE ARMY NOW, with Pauley Shore, which she loved.

Over the next couple months, I took her to see PULP FICTION and ED WOOD, and she proclaimed both to be two of the worst movies she'd ever seen.

I knew then it wasn't gonna work out.  And it didn't!

Every time someone has invoked CITIZEN KANE as an archetypal boring film, I've replied, "You haven't seen it, have you?" and been correct. Only one friendship has survived this failure, because it had lasted a decade before the subject came up.

Sort of on a similar note, I stopped seeing someone a couple years ago when she saw all the books I had and suggested I carve them into pieces to create novelty shelves made out of desecrated books. Like, what the fuck. Dealbreaker.

I wouldn't use movies to for this kind of test, and I certainly hope no one would use it on me!

JB, your house is the kind of place I'd love to wander for hours on end.  I wouldn't be looking for an escape route, I'd be looking for the next "portal"!
