And yesterday (May 27), writer of that episode Harlan Ellison turned 83.

Considering that she wasn't much of a star in her younger days, the longevity of Joan's career for middle age and onward is staggering; she actually starred in a theatrical film this year.

According to one or two sources, Harlan Ellison claimed to have created "Star Trek" and Roddenberry was just riding on his coattails... :)

As soon as Edith got run over by the truck, the timeline where Harlan wrote the episode vanished.
