As a composer, Johann Sebastian Bach (drawing his inspiration in music of the past as much as music of his days) was considered uncool and old-fashioned in his own time. Yet, even if most teenagers of today probably have no idea who he is, he is still played to this day while composers who were more in tune with their time and way more successful (like Hasse, or Graun) have fallen into oblivion, in the same way people will have forgotten about Oasis while still listening to the Beatles in a few decades.

It is youth's job to glorify their own stuff and negate what came before. That's a way of developping your own identity. But at one time, you're supposed to grow up and understand that who you are and what you like come from something. I only began to understand Kirby because of his influence on JB, for example. The thing is nowadays (and a sentence beginning like that would make anyone sound like a grumpy old guy) time is compressed. You don't have time to realize you're looking at a bad copy and go search for treasures into the past instead when you're perpetually distracted and blinded by the shiny new 'new'. That shiny new 'new' has little depth but it's OK because another shiny new 'new' will replace it very soon.

That TIME article makes about as much sense as cover stories on the most important events in a given year -- that come out in November.

True... though ultimately, they did call it!

(Another 1977 movie like THE TURNING POINT won a Golden Globe for Best Drama, and was then nominated for the Best Picture Oscar... do they even show that movie on TV anymore?)
