Ron, they could also go the opposite route and turn them into a goofy Canadian version of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY...

Of course, since the Guardians of the Galaxy is a goofy version of the Guardians of the Galaxy already...

Let's not forget getting Liam Neeson as Puck. A little CGI and voila.

Teenage Negasonic Warhead from "Deadpool" seems to have the effects for Cannonball, but how expensive are they? He's got to be a kinda pricey character. Then again... they could just not show him using his powers save for very rarely. And on the gripping hand, Supergirl, while slightly disappointing, seems to be pulling it off.

And as I think of it, Sunspot might be REALLY expensive. That powered up effect might be kinda challenging too...

I guess I'll have to wait patiently and nonjudgmentally (hopefully) to see how this turns out.

I see Peter DInklage is going to be playing Herve Villachaize in an upcoming film. That seems wrong to me, since the only thing they have in common is being small. And Dinklage is six inches taller!

Just picture it:
Guardian in all black leather, a strategically placed maple leaf on one shoulder! His mercenary-for-hire, bad-ass wife, Heather at his side! Big guns!
Mixed race siblings, Aurora and Nothstar!
Totally CGI, savage Sasquatch!
A white hipster, bearded, man-bun wearing Shaman-like guy.

The villain/ Dark, evil Canadian goddess, Narya, The Destroyer!

Gooo, Hollywood!

I'm reminded of when I first saw Maggie Q. I thought "Elizabeth!" As in Shaman's daughter. But there's me race swapping again!

Unfortunately, you can all-too-easily see the Fox Studios/Hollywood-think at play with that idea:

"We have the X-MEN, and we have the R-rated LOGAN and DEADPOOL movies... what do we have that can tap into the goofy GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY market?"

"Hey!  We have the Canadian ALPHA FLIGHT!  Canadians are hysterical, right??"

"Brilliant!!!"

Yeah, we all know how hilarious that Canadian Logan is!

Oh, wait.... not funny, and not Canadian any more!

In the animated "Pryde of the X-Men", some genius decided exactly what James noted... Wolverine very clearly Australian by accent.

On the other hand, prognosticating that an Aussie WOULD eventually be playing Logan was brilliant...

Fox gets at least one point for:

Fox is making serious efforts to find ethnically appropriate actors, conducting wide searches for a Native American to play Moonstar and a South American for Sunspot.

Lets see if they have learned from their other mistakes.

So, the casting still seems pretty good, unfortunately, the other shoe has dropped.  Here's a quote from director Josh Boone:

"We are making a full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe. There are no costumes. There are no supervillains. We’re trying to do something very, very different.”

And the synopsis:

Held in a secret facility against their will, five new mutants have to battle the dangers of their powers, as well as the sins of their past. They aren’t out to save the world — they’re just trying to save themselves.

Yeah, that sounds just like the comic...

This one really confuses me.  This resembles the comic not at all.  Why doesn't Fox just make a new X-Men themed mutant movie with the above premises?  Normally, I get that its name recognition, but does 'New Mutants' really mean anything to a civilian audience?  Couldn't they just call it X-Mutants and get the same marketing results?

That's not the only problem with this film. They also cast a very light skinned/white looking Brazilian actor to play Sunspot instead of casting a darker skinned Brazilian actor to play the character. I guess Hollywood hasn't gotten the menu that there are a large number of Brazilians (and Latinos in general) who are of Black African descent and who have Black physical features.

Sunspot's mom was a white American, tho, so the lighter skin would make sense.

However, this kid looks just plain white.

Let's see now. In the X-MEN movies thus far, we have seen a British Professor X, and old Magneto, a too-tall Wolverine, a too-old Jean, a dwarf as Bolivar Trask*, a mangling of the Dark Phoenix story, a mangling of the "Days of Future Past" story, and a disdain to the point of mockery for the costumes. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

So, for the NEW MUTANTS you're going to expect fidelity?

The actor cast as Sunspot is from Brazil.

Further adding to my boggling at this...isn't that synopsis basically the same as the most recent F4 butchering?  Is Fox really wanting to repeat the wild success of that film?

IIRC, Sunspot's mom was also Brazilian. Remember, since most people in Brazil are racially mixed, they all come in all shades and have various physical features and there is no guarantee (regardless of how a their parents and siblings might look) that a Brazilian of mixed ancestry will be born with the same racial physical features that their parents and siblings might have (the same is also true of African Americans). So two mixed Brazilians with mostly Black physical features could have a child that looks white, and vise versa.

As for Sunspot, him being a dark skinned Brazilian with mostly black physical features was an important part of his character since he faced prejudice for being dark skinned.

One of my big problems with the X-Men films is the ever-changing casts. Numerous roles have been played by two actors whilst Beast / Hank has been played by threeand Cyclops by four. Given that Sunspot was already in DOFP why not stick with that actor?
