In the spirit of the Top JB Moments thread in the main section, I figured I might as well get the ball rolling on this, since we haven't had a top ten list for TREK in years.

Here are the guidelines--feel free to name your top ten episodes of STAR TREK (be they from just TOS, from each and every series throughout the franchise, or a combination of the above, plus the movies if you're so inclined). Also feel free to list your top ten moments from STAR TREK (from just TOS, from each and every series, and/or a combined list from all of them, etc.).

Aaaaannnndddd--GO!

These are pretty much in order:
1)Where No Man Has Gone Before (TOS--second pilot)
2)Darmok (TNG)
3)The Doomsday Machine (TNG)
4)The Cage (Original Pilot)
5)Balance of Terror (TOS)
6)Relics (TNG)
7)Inner Light (TNG)
8)Trials and Tribblations (DS9)
9)Devil In The Dark (TOS)
10)Assignment: Earth (TOS)

These are in no particular order. Also, I notice many of these are "little" moments:
1)Gary Mitchell reading poetry to Doctor Dehner.
2)Kirk: "This is my chicken sandwich and coffee" then demanding he wants all the tribbles off the ship.
3)Pike and Spock touching the "singing" leaves.
4)Decker breaking down describing the loss of his crew.
5)Picard and Lieutenant Commander Darren playing music in the Jefferies tube.
6)There are three lights.
7)Spock playing music for Adam
8)Picard telling the story of Gilgamesh to Dathan
9)Reg Barcalay establishing the first communication with Voyager.
10)A piece of OUR action!

Top Ten Moments-

1.) "Stonn... She is yours. After a time, you may find that having is not so pleasing a thing after all as wanting. It is not logical, but it is often true."
2.) "How many fingers am I holding up?" "That's not very damn funny."
3.) "Gentlemen... I suggest you beam me aboard."
4.) "It was written by an Earthman named Shakespeare a long... time... ago!!" "Which does NOT alter the fact that I wrote it again this morning!"
5.) "I'll state that I warned you about Bailey's condition. Now that's no bluff!" "Anytime you can bluff me, Doctor--!!"
6.) "Would you mind telling me who that is?" "That... Miss Lincoln, is simply my cat." "Your c--?" (Double take)
7.) "I'll save you, fair maiden!" "Sorry, neither..."
8.) "Why don't you tell me what your planet Vulcan is like on a lazy evening when the moon is full?" "Vulcan has no moon, Miss Uhura." "I am not surprised, Mr. Spock."
9.) "Charlie, there are a million things in this world you can have and million things you can't!"
10.) "And if there are self-made purgatories, then we all have to live in them. Mine can be no worse than somebody else's."

Episodes & Movies

1.) Where No Man Has Gone Before
2.) Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
3.) Shore Leave
4.) The Corbomite Manuever
5.) Balance of Terror
6.) The Naked Time
7.) Conscience of the King
8.) Dagger of the Mind
9.) City On the Edge of Forever
10.) This Side of Paradise

I'm certain this thread will go on to contain scenes, moments, and stories that I'll wish I had thought to include. For now, I'll go with this list...

I'm pretty sure there are only four lights, and Picard's interrogator was trying to get him to see five.

My Top ten episodes in no particular order

Where No man Has Gone Before - TOS
Journey to Babel - TOS
City on the Edge of Forever - TOS
Mirror Mirror - TOS
Amok Time - TOS
Q Who - TNG
The Magnificent Ferengi - DS9
Trials and Tribbl-ations - DS9
In The Pale Moonlight - DS9
Far Beyond the Stars - DS9

My top ten moments in no particular order

From the TNG episode 'Family'. Picard's emotional breakdown while fighting with his brother Robert.  That scene never fails to get me emotional.

From the DS9 episode 'Tears of the Prophets'  Jadzia's death was so unexpected. It had such an impact on the characters and on myself. I both love and dread this episode.

From the episode 'Trials and Tribbl-ations' When Captain Sisko met Captain Kirk.

From the episode 'City on the Edge of Forever' When Kirk has to let Edith die. In my opinion Shatner's greatest bit of acting throughout the series.

From 'Wrath of Khan' Spock's death scene.

From the TOS episode 'Amok Time' Spock's reaction to seeing Captain Kirk alive.

From the TOS episode 'Trouble with Tribbles' When the tribbles come falling out of storage and bury Kirk.

From the ' The Search for Spock' Spock's recollection at the end of the movie and his eyebrow raise. Getting to that moment is so worth sitting through the rest of that terrible movie.

From the TOS episode 'Journey to Babel' so many great scenes in this episode. But I'd have to go with the scene in sickbay at the end of the episode. From Spock asking why his father married his mother. Sarek's response and finally with the Doctor saying he finally got the final word. It all worked so well.

From the TNG episode 'Deja Q' The scene in the brig when Q calls Worf a Romulan. That scene made me laugh out loud.

They'd all be TOS, of course. In broadcast order. . .

CHARLIE X

WHAT ARE LITTLE GIRLS MADE OF?

MIRI

THE CORBOMITE MANEUVER

BALANCE OF TERROR

THE DEVIL IN THE DARK

THE CITY ON THE EDGE OF FOREVER

MIRROR, MIRROR

THE IMMUNITY SYNDROME

THE ULTIMATE COMPUTER

A very difficult culling, since almost the whole first season is composed of favorites!

As to "moments," also in broadcast order, and not all "pleasant," just memorable...

• THE MAN TRAP -- Prof. Crater, stunned with a phaser, talking in "slow motion." At 16 I thought that was so cool!

• CHARLIE X -- The faceless crewwoman.

• BALANCE OF TERROR -- "In another reality, I might have called you friend."

• SPACE SEED -- "It is better to rule in Hell than to serve in Heaven."

• THIS SIDE OF PARADISE -- "For the first time in my life, I was happy."

• WHO MOURNS FOR ADONAIS? -- "I'm sorry, Keptin. I never met a god before."

• THE CHANGELING -- "My congratulations, sir. A flawless display of logic." "You didn't think I had it in me, did you, Spock?" "No, sir."

• A PIECE OF THE ACTION -- "I would advise youse t' keep dailin', Oxmyx."

• RETURN TO TOMORROW -- "A thousand year prison, Thalassa."

* BY ANY OTHER NAME -- "It's green!"

Like JB, I need look no farther than the original series.

"Where No Man Has Gone Before"
"The Corbomite Maneuver"
"The Menagerie" (counting this as one episode)
"Balance of Terror"
"Devil in the Dark"
"City on the Edge of Forever"
"Amok Time"
"Mirror, Mirror"
"The Doomsday Machine"
"The Ultimate Computer"

As for moments: hard to whittle it down...but my favorites are surely in "Amok Time," a couple of glimpses into how deep the Kirk/Spock/McCoy friendship really runs:

  • Turbolift scene: "I also request...McCoy." "I would be honored, sir."
  • Sickbay scene: "JIM!"

Sad to see no one here has mentioned TNG "Best of both worlds" yet.
That was a pretty tense double parter. (thought the first part probably more than the second part)

This is too hard to do in one sitting! I'm going to throw out these personal favourites, and come back and add to them as others occur to me.

Top 10 Episodes:
The Naked Time
City on the Edge of Forever
Mirror, Mirror
Yesterday's Enterprise
Sacrifice of Angels
Timeless
All Good Things

Top 10 Moments:
1. "Don't tell me it's just a theory science officer! I know it's just a theory! We may go up in the biggest ball of flame that's been seen in these parts since the last star exploded, but we've got to take that one in 10 thousand chance!"
2. "The war is going badly...much worse than is generally known. Starfleet estimates surrender is inevitable within 6 months. One ship today won't make a difference."
3. "We're dealing with beings who can bend time. I might be back 10 years from now. I might be back yesterday. But I WILL be back."
4. "Do you know what you did? I could have saved her!" "He knows doctor. He knows."
5. "What are you trying to tell me Q?" Q parts his lips to whisper in Pickard's ear, but suddenly draws back. "That would be telling."
6. "You have a good bedside manner Spock."

JB - I was surprised to see What Are Little Girls Made Of? on your top 10 list. The other 9 episodes that you named I also loved, but not that one. Would you mind saying what you enjoy about that episode?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Marten I went with Q Who in part because we were limited to 10 episodes. Had we more episodes I would have added 'The Best of Both Worlds'. Since Q Who is directly tied to 'TBOBW' I went with that one. Also in one of my 10 favorite moments. Picard's reaction's in Family.
For me The Best of Both Worlds is when TNG came into it's own. There have been a few episodes previously to that two part that I liked. But it was with these episodes that I really began to like the series.
TOS and nothing but TOS.
WHAT ARE LITTLE GIRLS MADE OF?
THE CORBOMITE MANEUVER
BALANCE OF TERROR
SPACE SEED
THE CITY ON THE EDGE OF FOREVER
AMOK TIME
MIRROR, MIRROR
THE DOOMSDAY MACHINE
JOURNEY TO BABEL
THE TROUBLE WITH TRIBBLES
Moments:
Many of mine have already been mentioned...but I'll add in Kirk's
"Risk is our business" speech in RETURN TO TOMORROW.
1. BALANCE OF TERROR
2. THE CORBOMITE MANEUVER
3. THE MAN TRAP
4. SPACE SEED
5. TOMORROW IS YESTERDAY
6. THE CITY ON THE EDGE OF TOMORROW
7. A TASTE OF ARMAGEDDON
8. WHERE NO MAN HAS GONE BEFORE
9. MIRROR, MIRROR
10. THE GAMESTERS OF TRISKELION
Some memorable scenes;
#1. "Diplomats. The best diplomat I know is a fully activated phaser bank.
And the rest;
--"In every revolution, there's one man with a vision."
"Captain Kirk. I shall consider it."
-- "He's a sorcerer that one. He reads  the thoughts in my brain."
-- "I've already got a female to worry about. Her name's the Enterprise."
-- The Kirk Finnegan fight.
-- When McCoy learns Nancy's "true self" in MAN TRAP.
-- "I would have cherished you, cared for you...."  Adonais.
Many of these scenes are made memorable by a quote. A couple come from episodes that don't even make my top 10. Interesting.
Been putting some thought into this. Very hard to narrow it down to a top ten, because I have a lot of favorites. My list can easily change from day to day, so don't take this as definitive.
In no particular order...
"Where No Man Has Gone Before"
"The Corbomite Maneuver"
"The Naked Time"
"Balance of Terror"
"Space Seed"
"The City on The Edge of Forever"
"The Changeling"
"The Doomsday Machine"
"Mirror, Mirror"
"The Ultimate Computer"
WHERE NO MAN HAS GONE BEFORE is certainly one of my favorite episodes, but I found myself struggling to choose which of the others to bump in its favor.
Maybe if the list had gone all the way to eleven.....
Yeah, I found myself struggling with this list, and ended up bumping the likes of "Who Mourns For Adonais?", "Shore Leave", "The Menagerie", etc.
Limited to only ten, I could probably compile a different list every day for the next week, because my most-favorite episodes would better fit into a top twenty list. Most of the first season is excellent, and there are some choice episodes in the second season, particularly in the front half.
This was harder than I thought it'd be. I made a list of the first two series of Star Trek and started stripping it down and got to... 32 episodes!  Getting it down to 10 was tough.
Same for the top 10 moments, much harder than expected.
Still, here goes with my list (for today at least) ...
My Top 10 Star Trek Stories...
1 - Charlie X
2 - What Are Little Girls Made Of?
3 - The Corbomite Maneuver
4 - Balance of Terror
5 - The Devil in the Dark
6 - The City on the Edge of Forever
7 - Operation: Annihilate!
8 - The Doomsday Machine
9 - The Deadly Years
10 - The Immunity Syndrome
...and Top Ten moments...
1 -  'Charlie X' - The faceless crew woman - still creeps me out to this day
2 - 'What Are Little Girls Made Of?' - when Korby is revealed to be an android as well
3 - 'The Corbomite Maneuver' - "Not chess, Mr. Spock. Poker! Do you know the game?" - Kirks bluff to Balok
4 -  Balance of Terror - "He's a sorcerer, that one! He reads the thoughts in my brain!" - the whole 'cat 'n' mouse' battle is great
5 - 'The Devil in the Dark' - Moments after Chief Vanderberg and the other guards move on, they hear a scream and return to find Schmitter reduced to a pile of ashes
6 - 'The City on the Edge of Forever' - when Kirk has to let Edith die
7 - 'Operation: Annihilate!' - "You've been so concerned about his Vulcan eyes, doctor, you forgot about his Vulcan ears." - Kirk to McCoy after Spock overhears McCoy's compliment
8 - 'Mirror, Mirror' - the moment the landing party start to step off the transporter pads and Kirk looks up and sees Spock with a goatee, the crew wearing odd variation on the normal uniforms and offering Kirk an outstretched arm salute
9 - 'The Doomsday Machine' - The moment The Constellation is approaching the doomsday machine and Kirk activates the time delay trigger and asks to be beamed out - and the transporter fails...
10 - 'By Any Other Name' - when Rojan punishes Kirk by crushing one of the dehydrated crewmen and it turned out to be Yeoman Thompson - I was so sure that Lieutenant Shea would be the one killed
As much as I will always love "Star Trek" above all, there are good episodes in all televised Trek (yes, even Voyager - though I'm hard pressed to think of one).
I agree Ron, there are some good episodes in all the Star Trek series. I watched 'The Next Generation' when it aired, 'DS9', 'Voyager' and 'Enterprise' I only got around to watching in the last few years.
I grew up with 'Star Trek' though and it's the series I keep going back to if I ever fancy watching a Trek episode. When asked for a top 10 list the episodes and moments come readily to mind from the original show, not so much from the other series.
Has to be TOS of course and could easily pick all my top ten choices from Season 1 - surely the best season ever of any Star Trek series over the course of 50 years.
In no particular order:
- The Corbomite Maneuver
- This Side of Paradise
- The Enemy Within
- The Naked Tiime
- Tomorrow Is Yesterday
- Errand of Mercy
- Day of the Dove
- Shore Leave
- City on the Edge of Forever
- Wolf in the Fold
Just outside - Paradise Syndrome, Balance of Terror, Journey to Babel, Amok Time
As for moments:
The look Kirk gives the bridge crew when he returns post illness The Deadly Years
The landing party arrive at Cestus III - and that music.  Arena
Kirk stepping out of the shadows, swigging from the bottle of Saurian Brandy and looking at Janice Rand.  Enemy Within
The conversation between Spock and McCoy in the prison cell -Bread and Circuses
“Let’s get the hell out of here ..”  City
The cat and mouse game with the Romulan commander - Balance of Terror
Kirk grieving over body of Miramanee - Paradise Syndrome
Kirk on the empty bridge - This Side of Paradise.
Rand/McCoy/Kirk discussion in his quarters - Balance of Terror
Ruk in the catacombs - What Are Little Girls Made Of?
Kirk punching Kang - Day of the Dove
McCoy and Yeoman Barrows flirting - Shore Leave
Gorn spinning round to face Kirk - Arena
The lawgivers walking towards the camera - Return of the Archons
The argument with Bailey on the bridge before he is relieved of duty - Corbomite
Kirk/Spock/McCoy emerging from the shuttlecraft - Metamorphosis
