Archie Goodwin was inspired to recreate the Claremont/Byrne/Austin team after seeing our work on STARLORD. It was in the early Spring that I started work on the project.

"Uncanny X-Men" #108 was JB's first issue on the title. JB's first published Marvel comic with the (then) new X-Men was in "Marvel Team-Up" #53 (cover date January 1977):
And though the story takes place after "Uncanny X-Men" #108, "Iron Fist" #15 came out earlier (cover date September 1977):

That new Wolverine costume Cockrum made was not one of his finest. Glad JB changed it back pretty soon afterwards. By the way, was that your call, JB?

Archie Goodwin was smart.
*****
Goodwin was the first editor that I noticed, probably because of his intros in the Epic line of comics, which I read voraciously at the time. I also liked his writing and the fact that "Archie Goodwin was inspired to recreate the Claremont/Byrne/Austin" proves that he did have great editing instincts, to say the least.

I seem to recall something odd about Wolverine's claws in MTU #53.Was there a panel that showed his claws rather short?
Am I dreaming this or is it real? If it was real...was there an explanation or reason?

David, I know the panew you are thinking about with Wolverine's claws. I thought it was meant to show the claws just beginning to pop out.

By the way, was that your call, JB?••• Dave showed me a model sheet he'd done of the Fang suit. "This is Wolverine's new costume," he said. "It's a bear to draw." I walked across the hall to Archie's office and told him I thought it was unfair that Dave should make such a radical change in the character right before leaving the book. Archie shrugged and told me to change it back if I wanted.
