Never a real option. Chris had so poisoned that well, for me, that there was no desire to stay.
And, as I noted many times, without me in the way he went on to turn the X-Men's book into one of the most successful up to that time.
***** JB, in my perfect world, I'd enjoy seeing what might've happened had Claremont left the book right after X-Men #138. (After Jean's funeral.) We know what stories that came after (Days Of Future Past, the Wendigo story, etc) but without Chris, you could've planted subplots that would've played out well beyond your final issue. I vaguely remember you had something brewing that involved Wolverine and Sabertooth, and I'm sure you had a certain way you would've developed Kitty and her relationships with Peter, Ororo and Kurt.
I dare say an extended JB X-Men run could've made the book just as successful... if not more since your art and writing were just getting better.*

*I also think your FF run could've happened as well. No need to sacrifice THAT in this scenario!
