A couple years ago I heard the theory that "Titanic" is really a time travel movie...

(some key points, which include spoilers)

...so when we finally saw it with my son, in part to  broaden his cultural literacy, I watched it with this in mind.

And the movie becomes a lot more fun to watch!

AND in watching it I found there is another dimension to add to the theory...

(SPOILERS)

There are 2 other time travelers in addition to Jack Dawson, each integral to the plot and each working towards the goal of either trying to save Rose or kill her:
= Titanic builder Thomas Andrews (played by Victor Garber, also good-guy time traveler in "Legends of Tomorrow"*) who gives Rose hints about her fate and finally, in his last act, the life-jacket that saves her life; and
= man servant Lovejoy (played by David Warner, also bad-guy time traveler in "Time After Time" and etc), who actively tries to stop Jack from talking to (and ultimately saving) Rose, and who finally chains Jack up in a remote cabin, amongst his other dastardly deeds.

We never learn why Rose's fate is so integral to the timeline, and why it appears 2 groups are vying for her life. Hopefully Cameron is working on that sequel now while we're waiting on Avatar 2!

* When Garber first appears on screen my son did a double-take at me, recognizing him as Prof Stein, which I confirmed with a nod. It also got the wheels turning on this above addition to the time travel theory.

The Titanic was the maguffin for the first episode of TIME TUNNEL.

And, of course, features in TIME BANDITS.

Hell, it even showed up in the 2014 CGI-animated version of MR. PEABODY & SHERMAN!

If we imagine time to be like a river with, as Spock says in "The City on the Edge of Forever", eddies and currents, it's not hard see the Titanic creating a pretty major whirlpool, at least relative to the surface of the Earth.

Much of the main story from the first few seasons of DOWNTON ABBEY is set in motion by one death from the Titanic in the first episode.

The appeal of DOWNTON ABBEY has eluded me -- and that's one of the reasons. The Titanic played such an important part in an early season of UPSTAIRS, DOWNSTAIRS to start there on DOWNTON seemed most unoriginal.

There are so many similarities in the two shows, I've often thought of doing a side-by-side listing.

I remember there being an episode of Voyagers set during the last hours of the Titanic.

All these time travelers on the Titanic reminds me of the issue of Timewalker from Valiant where they travel to several different points of Hitler's life, and pretty much everyone they meet is another time traveler there to try to kill Hitler.
