Fun article from the Washington Post: How realistic are New York apartments on TV shows?

We always knew that the apartments on FRIENDS were oh so expensive!

SO tired of the constant references to Monica's apartment on FRIENDS. The show established quite early on that it was actually our Ms Geller's grandmother's place, rent controlled, in which Monica was essentially living illegally. And even with that, she still needed a roommate to make ends meet.

Agreed...with a caveat.  I don't think Chandler and Joey could have afforded an apartment in the same building given it was really only on one of their incomes.  Perhaps Chandler could have paid for it (arguable given what prices in midtown are), but he couldn't have afforded what he did re: extra circulars by doing so.

Chandler's salary was high enough to impress Rachel, as l recall. No easy feat. (Imagine if he'd been a doctor, too!)

Wasn't it also a sitcom? Look at me, I've notice a sitcom isn't totally realistic in rent values!!! Aren't I brilliant?

When it comes to sitcoms, I've long been more concerned about those interiors that clearly do not fit into the exteriors!

Wasn't Chandler an accountant? Accountants make good money...

Chandler was a very well-paid transponster.
