Less than a month to go, before GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, VOL. 2 more or less officially kicks off the next summer movie season... what are you all looking forward to, and what are you looking to avoid? I'm betting on being able to catch most (but probably not all) of the following:
-GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, VOL. 2 (no-brainer, with the whole family... and should easily be the biggest movie of the summer)
-WONDER WOMAN (please, please, please let this be good!)
-IT COMES AT NIGHT (interesting-looking indie horror)
-THE MUMMY (2017) (damn you, Tom Cruise... this doesn't look too shabby!)
-CARS 3 (a big maybe... my two youngest may still want to see this)
-DESPICABLE ME 3 (another one for the whole family)
-THE HOUSE (Amy Poehler & Will Ferrell comedy, possible date-night with the wife?)
-BABY DRIVER (new Edgar Wright action flick, looks like a blast)
-SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING (my son is super-excited for this one--me, too!)
-DUNKIRK (Christopher Nolan WWII epic, maybe I'll see with my father around his birthday)
-ANNABELLE: CREATION (only if reviews are solid... skipped the first one, but trailer looks decent & super-creepy)
And my personal Bottom 5 to avoid:
-ALIEN: COVENANT (enough already, Ridley Scott)
-PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES (enough already, Johnny Depp!)
-BAYWATCH: THE MOVIE (hated & avoided the TV show, can't possibly see this with a clear conscience)
-TRANSFORMERS: THE LAST KNIGHT (enough already, Satan!!!)
-THE EMOJI MOVIE (even my kids think this looks stupid)
Edit: The remaining wide releases, per Box Office Mojo:
-KING ARTHUR: LEGEND OF THE SWORD -LOWRIDERS -SNATCHED -DIARY OF A WIMPY KID: THE LONG HAUL -EVERYTHING, EVERYTHING -CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS: THE MOVIE -47 METERS DOWN -ALL EYEZ ON ME -ROUGH NIGHT -AMITYVILLE: THE AWAKENING -WISH UPON -WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES (no interest, but most likely a Top 10 hit for the summer) -GIRLS TRIP -VALERIAN & THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS -ATOMIC BLONDE (definite rental for me) -AN INCONVENIENT SEQUEL -THE DARK TOWER -DETROIT -MIDNIGHT SUN -THE HITMAN'S BODYGUARD -THE NUT JOB 2 -ALL SAINTS -POLAROID -TULIP FEVER -VILLA CAPRI

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, leads the way for me.
Then: Wonder Woman Spider-Man Homecoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 War for the Planet of the Apes
As far as avoiding a film, probably The House. I actively avoid Will Ferrell movies. It's just not my brand of comedy.

I'm going to start up my Summer Box Office thread with this weekend's release of THE FATE OF THE FURIOUS simply because the last movie (FURIOUS 7) set all kinds of records in 2015 and went deep into the summer months. It may not come out in May, but Universal is definitely challenging the start date of the summer movie season with this franchise.

Movies I will definitely see Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (already have my tickets) Wonder Woman Spider-Man: Homecoming Some Like It Hot (1959; re-release)
Movies that I will probably see King Arthur: Legend of the Sword The Mummy My Cousin Rachel Dunkirk Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets
Movies that I might see Alien: Covenant Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (I think the trailer looks great, but I wish Johnny Depp wasn't in it; his shtick wore out its welcome ages ago)

WILL SEE: -Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
-Spider-Man: Homecoming
-Baby Driver
-Despicable Me 3
-Wonder Woman
-War for the Planet of the Apes
MAYBE SEE:
-PotC: Dead Men Tell No Tales (Didn't even bother with the last one, but the trailer had elements of the things I liked about the first movie)
-Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (Luc Besson fan, even though I hated The Fifth Element at first. It's since grown on me.)
-Baywatch (Alexandra Daddario)
-The Mummy (Depends on reviews, but I think Tom Cruise has been pretty consistent, both in a good and bad sense, in terms of action movies lately.)
-Atomic Blonde (Charlize Theron as a female John Wick looks fun)
-Dunkirk

The only one to which I am looking forward is WONDER WOMAN, and I will probably chicken out and wait for Pay-per-View, so I can curl up in my security blanket and watch it alone!

I may have to wait for feedback - from critics and here on the JBF - before I venture to the theater to see WONDER WOMAN. Looks good, so far....
SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING is a lock. The first movie I'll see in the theater with his name in the title since the very disappointing SPIDER-MAN 3.
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2: I'll see it, might be a home video experience, though. The wife has already expressed disinterest (not much liking the first one). I thought the first film was enjoyable, but I don't think I got into as much into it as its popularity would have suggested I should...so it won't hurt my feelings to wait a little bit for the second.
DESPICABLE 3 will also be a home video watch.
ALIEN: COVENANT: I don't think I'll bother.
At this point, nothing else on the list holds interest, either.

BAYWATCH looks preposterous.
I can't wait to see it.

(She is indeed a healthy-looking woman... but not enough to make me sit through that in the theaters!)
I'm also updating my original post, to list some other wide releases that may interest others (using Box Office Mojo as my source).

And I'll even go out on a limb and make my predictions for the Top 10 box office hits of the summer...
1. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, VOL. 2 2. DESPICABLE ME 3 3. SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING 4. WONDER WOMAN 5. TRANSFORMERS: THE LAST KNIGHT
6. PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES 7. WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES 8. THE MUMMY (2017) 9. CARS 3 10. BAYWATCH: THE MOVIE
(And if any original non-reboot/non-sequel has any chance of cracking the Top 10, I'd put money on BABY DRIVER. Or maybe ALL EYEZ ON ME.)

Going to see FATE OF THE FURIOUS asap, but after that I'm not sure what I'll go see and what I'll wait for on DVD.
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, VOL 2, KING ARTHUR LEGEND OF THE SWORD and DESPICABLE ME 3 I *might* go see in theaters. WONDER WOMAN is a maybe, but not as strongly as the others.
CARS 3 will probably be a DVD or Blu-Ray purchase, while THE NUT JOB 2 will either be from Netflix or a Redbox rental.
WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES I will end up seeing one way or another, because Heidi is a fan of the franchise. We own all the movies so far (from the remake series, not the original), but frankly I prefer the original series.

I didn't think I'd be all that excited about Guardian of the Galaxy 2, but now it's almost here, I'm buzzed for it.
I'm looking foward to see Spider-Man and Dunkirk probably deserves a go, but not that excited about anything else.
Guy Ritchie's take on King Arthur looks horrible. It actually makes me a little angry.

So far, GOTGV2 gets a thumbs-down from me; and reviews (and general outlook for this weekend) doesn't look good for KING ARTHUR: LEGEND OF THE SWORD, nor for the Amy Schumer/Goldie Hawn comedy SNATCHED.
So for me, saving my next batch of summer-movie-money for next month's WONDER WOMAN (fingers crossed).

Next big release, this Friday... ALIEN: COVENANT
No interest in this yet-another-trip to the well, but still curious to hear thoughts from other Forum members.

I just realized I don't have any no-brainers on my list as I feel a bit burned out of movies this year, but if my mood changes, GotG and Wonder Woman would get bumped up.
Might go to watch: Guardians of the Galaxy Wonder Woman Spider-Man Homecoming
Will wait for cable: King Arthur Valerian & The City of a Thousand Planets The Mummy Pirates of the Caribbean Transformers

I wouldn't go to see BAYWATCH even if the movie ticket came with a $50 bill stapled to it.
I might go to see PIRATES, even though I strongly suspect this franchise is going to burn me for the fourth time while coasting on the goodwill of a movie I enjoyed 14 years ago. Tomorrow's supposed to be rainy, so I might catch an early bird showing so I pay as little as possible.

I have my fingers crossed for WONDER WOMAN next week. Not just because she's my favorite fictional character and I hope for a film to do her justice; not even because I've just about lost all hope for DC films, but because 2017 has been a thoroughly underwhelming year for movies. I've seen nearly a dozen films in the theater this year, and haven't really loved any of them. Some were good, but not a one to date that I've had a desire to see twice.
