RIP. Don Rickles didn't just make you laugh, he forced you to laugh. He will be missed.

He was so wonderfully wicked. I'm surprised that no one had killed him.  Rest in Peace Mr. Rickles.

I guarantee hecklers took the night off when he was in town.

Great run!

I'm surprised that no one had killed him.

According to Rickles himself Frank Sinatra once saved his life. He said "Okay, boys, he's had enough!"

I still recall a Tonight Show bit where Carson went over to the set of Rickles' short-lived late 70s sitcom CPO Sharkey (it taped across the hall in Burbank) to complain that Rickles had broken Johnny's little pencil box that sat on his desk from when Rickles had guest hosted the night before.  You could see Rickles was initially taken aback that Carson brazenly interrupted a take of Rickles' show but he immediately recovered and they had a hilarious impromptu exchange that showed me what an incredibly quick mind Rickles had.  It served him well over the course of 70s years in show business and he was working right up to the end.  RIP, Mr. Warmth.

Matt, fun to see... that's the incident but they edited it down from a lengthier sequence.  Here's a fuller version (Carson is actually more of the aggressor and Rickles the stunned defender for a change, though he gets in some zingers.)  link

Here's another clip from the same year also on the Tonight Show where Rickles surprises Sinatra. link

First remembered him as Crapgame from KELLY'S HEROES.

His delivery of the line "Kinda makes you homesick, don't it?" always cracked me up.

RIP

I had the pleasure of seeing him live twice in the early nineties. The first time he opened for Sinatra, and the second time we sat right up front. I know he had been doing stand up forever, but I was still amazed at how quick on his feet he was with the comebacks. A great talent! RIP.

The truly sad thing is that when I mentioned Don Rickles' passing earlier
today, students weren't the only ones to give me puzzled looks.

Jimmy Kimmel had a wonderful tribute to Don Rickles. Incredibly real and heartfelt. Its shy of 13 minutes. But well worth it.

I wish that man was a guest every night on the late night
talk show circuit. Super funny, quick witted and one of
the best improv guys ever. I think he liked the.TONIGHT
SHOW after Johnny left because Jay was an easy mark.

RIP.
