The memory this brings back: My first convention was a Mid-Ohio-Con when I was in High School. Frank Miller was listed as a guest, but cancelled due to illness. I'm thinking '84. I did get to meet that John Byrne guy and several other creators and I was blown away by all the comics for sale!

The Indiana Con has Neal Adams, Buzz, Bob Layton, Gerhard as guests.

I might be tempted to make the drive... you take it for granted these guys will continue the con curcuit, but as we know that's not how life works, you must see Neal Adams while you have the chance. He and Stan are the biggest living legends we have left. Go and meet your heroes and have a bit of a chat, pay for an signed item or a sketch, show your appreciation to what they given you while you can.

Oh yeah, don't forget to take a picture or two.

Question for people that have been to Motor City Con recently - do art dealers show up? I'd really only be going for original art / commission purposes, and seeing whatever the kids wanted to do. Is it worth the time?

I go every year and I don't recall a whole lot of original art for sale.
I know you are able to commission artwork from some of the artists.
I got a Bill Sienkiewicz sketch and I saw Alan Davis whipping up an awesome Ben Grimm I would have loved to own.

I like going to cons. I like meeting and seeing the
artists and writers whose work I loved as a kid, and I
like seeing my JBFriends too. Heck, one of the
reasons I go is to see you guys.

Meeting Frank Miller, though, was a big deal for me.
Even though I only got to spend a few moments with him
at the photo opp and a few more getting his autograph,
Frank was one of my Holy Trinity of 80s cartoonists,
along with John Byrne & George Perez. Uncle Walt
rounds out my 80s Mount Rushmore, and I am sure we
share more than a few in our own top tens, but for me,
this was Frank Miller - Finally! Total bucket list
and worth every penny...

I haven't met everybody, and I wish I was using the
same autograph books or habits when I started going to
cons. So many guys I met numerous times, but I didn't
take a picture, e.g. Neal Adams, Joe Kubert, and Curt
Swan, just to name a few. So many guys I didn't have
sign my autograph books when I met them back in the
day, but I'm still working on it.

I'm glad to have met Stan Lee, but sad I didn't get to
meet Jack Kirby, Gil Kane, or Jim Aparo. Gil Kane was
my all-time favorite (John Byrne is my favorite living
cartoonist).

But for all these experiences, and more to come,
meeting John Byrne was by far the best, and that is
saying something, because a lot of these guys are
awesome with their fans, but John was beyond generous,
and whenever I hear some Bad Byrne Story at a con, I
am quick to tell people my stories, and I am glad to
say they stop and listen and say wow. That's cool.

So thanks again, JB, for being such a gracious host.

As for the rest of you, I look forward to seeing you
at the cons this year, or at least seeing some of your
pictures here!

P. S. If you want to see some more of my photos from
past cons, you can find them publicly posted on

Check it out!

Great photos and stories, Ted!

I hadn't gone to a con in over 15 years. Then Baltimore Comic Con announced Sal Buscema as a guest in 2013, and I just had to go.

I think I've been to at least one per year since then. I may go to three, this year. Already have tickets for Wizard World in Philly. Awesome Con in DC is pretty much a lock (Stan Lee!). And probably Baltimore again.

If one pays attention to most of the Big Bad Byrne stories, one might find oneself wondering "Why would he do/say that?"

And the answer, of course, is HE WOULDN'T!

Going to the con in Indy on April 15 primarily to meet Nichelle Nichols which would make her the first Star Trek TOS cast member I've ever met.

The comic book club, i.e. my students and I will have
our first booth at the upcoming OC Con (Ocean City, NJ).
They are really excited about it, and I hope they have a
memorable experience.

Billy Dee Williams is going to be there. I hope he is
excited to meet them!

Ted, how cool is that for your students?!? I do hope they have a good time as well. I would get a sketch, that is, if they weren't charging Jim Lee money!  What fun!!!
