John Byrne's Next Men was like Harrison Ford.
I'll explain:
Indiana Jones was an icon to me as a kid, so I could enjoy Ford's performance in other movies of the time that I would not have otherwise watched. ('Witness' for example)
(I even watched 'Somewhere in Time' with Christopher Reeve, because he's Superman.)
My collecting was only about Superheroes, and John Byrne has always been my comicbook artist icon, so even though I'm not inclined to collect comicbooks without Costumed do-gooders, I'm happy to enjoy JB's performance with this story.

My crappy analogy is crappy, but, yeah.
If anyone else starred in Witness my youthful self would never have spent the time to watch that movie because the topic would not have attracted me, but because I liked Ford I gave it a try and ended up enjoying the movie.
If any other comic creator introduced the Next Men concept I would not have felt compelled to follow the title. JB lured me in and I'm glad of it, because I enjoyed it very much.
(all things being equal I don't think JB would mind being equated to Indiana Jones)

Where was this stated? Really? How do we know he was eaten? I do recall some dinosaurs, but I didn't know that was his ultimate fate. How sad.

Does anyone else own the compleat edition books? These are like phone books, and a really fun ay to read Next Men. I don't think they ever collected the newer series in this way. Does anyone know if there are plans to do a phone book style trade of the post issue 30 work?

I own the Compleat editions.
That's how I first read Next Men. I nightly buried myself in it for days. It was a beautiful thing.

Doug, I also love them (prefer my comics in blck and white), but they never collected the post issue 30 issues in this format. Any idea why?

I seem to recall JB saying that the Compleat editions didn't sell well for IDW, perhaps because of the black and white format.
