Did you have to vote for Trump to attend his historic inauguration?
I applaud his achievement, all agreement or disagreement with his policy aside. He's become the most powerful man on the planet, he's done what only 44 other people (all men, so far) have done in the history of the USA.
I don't care, for one second, about stories of Russian involvement, etc and cheating etc etc etc blah blah blah -- Hilary Clinton would have pulled the same dirty shit tricks if she could -- and she tried -- they just didn't work. My point - it was a dirty but level playing field and Trump won. He beat the politicians at their own politics and won.
Let's all hope the professional man behind his slimey public persona is much different. I suspect it is. I suspect he will want to do a good job as President because his ego won't allow him to do a shitty one.
Time will tell.

much different. I suspect it is.

By all accounts (long before he ever decided to run for President), it
isn't. What I find absolutely boggling is all the Trump supporters who
have decided that all the negative things said about Trump were part of
a Clinton smear campaign. As if they haven't been part of his public
persona for the last 30 years.

You've said that before; so why did his ego allow his casinos to be failures even when other Atlantic City casinos were making a profit? Why did his ego allow Trump Airlines, Trump vodka, Trump magazine, Trump Mortgage, and Trump University to be failures? That Trump has a over-inflated ego is beyond a doubt; that his ego makes him successful is patently untrue.
Of course it's easy to be a "success" when you simply lie and say you're successful, evidence to the contrary.

There is a great deal of of behind-the-scenes information available that makes it clear that his "slimey public persona" is a very accurate reflection of his actual demeanor/disposition in private. It both puzzles and disenheartens me that so many Trump supporters are willing to engage in a high degree of wishful thinking about him. We have ample evidence from a wide variety of sources that he is an egotistical, thin-skinned, impatient, spiteful, mendacious, stubborn, selfish anti-intellectual. The notion that he might somehow overcome these qualities and become a good (or even competent) leader seems incredibly naive if not downright fantastical.
I'd also point out that there is a notable difference between the desire to do a good job as President and the ability to do a good job. Having personal qualities ill-suited to political leadership as well as no relevant experience whatsoever (and little desire to learn/improve/adapt) makes it very unlikely he will somehow manage to do a competent job, regardless of whether he really wants to.
