Drawing the shield is not an issue with a handy erasure to keep fixing, but then free hand inking it?  No way!

Freehand inking of the shield is REALLY SLOW. I've done it only a half dozen times. Mostly I use templates and a French curve in combination.

(One handy trick i figured out early on is to use the templates to draw the concentric circles of the shield. Then I use my Artograph to enlage the image to the size i need on the drawing. Then I freehand trace with pencil, followed by non-freehand inking.)
