"When the doctors cut into a patient, and it's cold, you know...the way it is now, today, steam rises from the body. And the doctor will...will warm himself over the open wound. Could anyone look on that and not feel changed?"

It's remarkable, looking back on it, how many pivotal scenes and moments I recall from M*A*S*H involve Mulcahy. Working as a supermarket checkout clerk at a farmer's market, the produce code for ears of yellow sweet corn was 4077. That always inevitably brought me back to the episode wherein they encompassed an entire year and Father Mulcahy was raising corn.

Easily one of my all-time favorite shows. Father Mulcahy may not have often been the central character, but was great when called on. RIP Padre.

Reportedly, that monologue was improvised by William Christopher (as were other scenes from "The Interview"). Good stuff.

I loved M*A*S*H. And Father Mulcahy was one of the few characters that made it thru the whole run (although, not played by Christopher in the pilot).
