The wife and I went to see "Moana" yesterday, Disney's latest. The line between Pixar and Disney grows thinner and thinner...
It is GREAT fun. Good for any age group (again, following Zootopia's example), fun and intriguing characters, a nice resolution (well, it IS Disney) and just great entertainment all around. The only issue I had with it is that it's a touch too evangelical for me... just a bit over the line (sweet Jesus... :)
But I'm pretty sure you'll like it, your kids'll like it, your family will like it - oh, and DO NOT MISS staying for the bonus at the end. Diane and I laughed for five minutes on that one...

The whole family is looking forward to this one... although it's easy to mix-up the two, I find that the Walt Disney Animation Studios films have been much more consistent lately, than those from the "Disney/PIXAR" branch. The recent WDAS entries include:
BOLT THE PRINCESS & THE FROG TANGLED WRECK-IT RALPH FROZEN BIG HERO 6 ZOOTOPIA
Not a turkey in the bunch! And MOANA looks to be just as much fun.

Oddly, I have no interest in seeing this whatsoever. Usually, I look forward to the latest Disney fare, but for this one, nothing at all.
Of course, we'll end up taking the girls to see it...

Mr. Byrne - there are a number of religious elements or themes to this movie, which I think are more present than a typical Disney film. Since one of the lead characters is a demi-god, I suppose I shouldn't be especially surprised... but it feels as if there is a very strong representation of Christian themes to me. The only possible comparison I might see is to the C.S. Lewis books, but I only saw the first movie; having never read the books, I don't know what the preponderance of religious allegory is in them. But in "Moana", it was enough to make me aware of it.
Naturally, your mileage may (probably SHOULD) vary. And the water effects are nothing short of fantastic. As a lot of this movie takes place on the ocean, it's especially awestriking.

Just got back from seeing it...
Visually stunning, but the songs didn't seem as memorable to me as previous Disney animated musicals (Dwayne Johnson's 'You're Welcome' and 'We Know The Way' the only ones sticking in my head right now).
That said, it was worth seeing it on the big screen, and this might be a Blu-Ray pick-up for next year.
I'm not sure if you can do a Pacific islander movie without having some of the lore and beliefs showing up, but it seems like a natural fit to me... I did find the antagonist of the film reminding me a bit too much of a sequence from FANTASIA 2000.
INVISO TEXT (Click or highlight to reveal):
There is a after credits scene, and it is a 4th wall breaker as well (also not sure why the image of a previous Disney CGI movie character shows up at the end of credits, other than maybe to see if anyone left in the audience would notice it...) |

I didn't find it especially Christian (as a Catholic-raised atheist.) Aside from one really obvious Old Testament image late, the rest of it felt more new age than anything. As I know they did a lot of work with Polynesian historians, my guess would be any spiritualism would come from there (and, of course, as we know, nearly all cultures tend to tell the same stories.)
I loved the movie, more than the last couple for sure (which I certainly liked.) I thought the main character was great, loved Rocky doing his thing. I thought the songs were better integrated with the story, without as many dopey broad comedy numbers. The title character's big song was just right, I felt.
Overall, though, one of my favorite Disney movies. But the fogey in me still loves hand-drawn animation. Alas, when a CGI movie looks as good as this one, I realize the war is long lost.

Watching TOY STORY recently for the umpteenth time, I was reminded why we used to think conventional animation still had some life in it. The original TS was mind boggling in its day, but still crude. And who among us could imagine what we'd see today?

I remember how the CGI water tentacle in THE ABYSS was considered "cutting edge" back in 1989 (Was it that long ago?!)...
A similar sequence at the beginning of this movie shows how far things have come.

I just played BACK TO THE FUTURE PART 2 for my gf's kids last night. The scenes with 3 Michael J Fox's and 2 Biff Tannens just sort of rolled past them, since the technology has come so far since then, though it was such a big deal how this was pulled off in 1989.

I remember when I first heard the dinosaurs in JURASSIC PARK were to be CGI. My thoughts and images in my head were all of proto-stop motion, jerky, blocky dinosaurs.
And then the adverts appeared.

My 10 year old daughter and I enjoyed it. I appreciate strong female leads in these Disney films very much.I thought the Rock was quite good but several times felt like he was seriously channeling Jack Black for some reason (also in a good way).
I really enjoyed his tattoo interaction very much, Simultaneously a Jiminy Cricket conscience AND a mute Greek Chorus.

I saw it this past weekend. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Its amazing how much CGI has advanced in animation.
Cool to see Nathan's name in the credits also.

Went to see it last Wednesday with my wife and seven year old daughter. As my wife is a Filipina, my daughter was delighted to see this princess is a Pacific Islander (like her).
The songs were good, with "You're Welcome" and "How Far I'll Go" appearing as the early standout/favorites. Auli'i Cravalho did a fine job as Moana, and Dwayne Johnson shows a LOT of range (and emotion!) in this. You might be surprised how good an actor he's become. Maui is a great role for him.
Overall, liked it quite a bit and expect we'll buy it on DVD.

I saw it Sunday & I liked it. Animation was beautiful and story was pretty solid. Songs were ok. Not bad but not really too memorable. Characters were good. I'd give this one an 8/10.

Okay, maybe figured out why the image of Wreck-It Ralph shows up at the end of the credits... Apparently the sequel is the next Disney Animation (non-Pixar) film in the schedule, since GIGANTIC got bumped from the March 2018 slot (sorry Nathan). |

Yes. The after credits scene is mentioned, but I'm asking if anyone stayed for it. Not everyone has the patience. In point of fact, when I saw it, I was the ONLY one in my theater that stayed.

Anyone ELSE stay for the end credits scene?
