What do you think he should have said?

Nothing. It was a perfect response, totally beyond the capabilities of a six year old. Also, he had no strokes!! Leader strong!

So is he supposed to just stand there quiet the whole time and let
Trump be the only one who talks? He stood up to the bully. Good for
him, I say.

Nobody said anything resembling that but whatever.

Every news outlet in the world is saying the debate was the most embarrassing in US history by far and that democracy and American voters are being made a farce by BOTH CANDIDATES.

But good for him for standing up to him if that's what you'd prefer to call it. Hope he wins, sincerely.

There are MANY ways to "stand up to the bully." Biden chose to look like an old fool in making his stand.

It's difficult to find fault with Biden's performance because nobody has
approached a presidential debate in the way Trump did. I know we all should
stop being surprised at this, but it's such a stupid strategy that nobody would
do it. Trump's main job was to win swing voters, and nothing in his approach
speaks to that. It's a pure base approach - a repeat of his rally talking points.
Trump is undisciplined, and his coaches were Rudy Giuliani and Chris Christie -
'nuff said! He had no plan, so he went on the attack. Even Sarah Palin
prepared for her debate.

Neither Biden nor Wallace anticipated the most erratic, aggressive debate
performance in recent history. The main takeaway from this is Trump literally
supported a white supremecist group, and encouraged them and his
supporters to disrupt and distrust the election. It's breathtaking in its
irresponsibility as a leader, and no amount of circus sideshow can change how
destructive this will be. I think Trump will lose the election, but his fringe
supporters have just been given the green light to violence. Nothing Biden did
compares to how divisive and destructive Trump's rhetoric has become. And
all in the name of saving face and personal victory. Disgusting.

Biden calling Trump a "clown" and waving him off with a "shut-up" may be
pretty innocuous stuff if you are judging him by Trump's established gutter
standards, and I think that was the point. Biden had to clap back in some way,
and being dismissive helped him address it and get into some substance. Not
responding would not work - Trump would have just continued to talk and
dominate. And going too hard on Trump could backfire - that would be truly
getting in the mud, which is not what Biden did. He struck a dismissive
approach to a bully, and also interrupted after Trump established it. But Biden
scored some actual policy points on clarifying his middle of the road road
green and police reform ideas, which does speak to swing voters. And he was
effective talking directly to voters

I will give Biden the most revealing moment. When Wallace was trying to nail
Trump down on condemning white supremicists in general, it was Biden who
suggested he specifically condemn the hate group Proud Boys. Biden made
him commit to a real group rather than the general term, and it gave a face to
the true racist nature of Trump and the Republicans. It's chilling how it
encompasses the worst of America - lack of gun control, racism, and voter
intimidation all wrapped up in one group.

And thanks to Trump, they are standing by.

Biden did NOT anticipate TRUMP giving the most erratic, aggressive debate performance in recent history!?!?? FOR REAL???

Then shame on him and he deserves to lose if he is THAT stupid and unprepared.

Not even Trump has spent an entire debate interrupting like he did last night.

Marc, why are you so flustered and outraged at Biden, but you say nothing of
Trump's white supremecy and voter suppression? Certainly that's more
important than all of your pearl clutching and finger wagging at Biden.

I think Biden hit the right balance of weariness and dismissal. Seniors, even ones who voted for Trump in 2016, represent a significant and gettable demographic. There are a lot of then, and they vote. I've heard Biden's exact words coming from a specific 2016 Trump voter of my acquaintance (my mom). She's just done with the boorishness.

The right wing shrieking today about Wallace conspiring with reality itself to sabotage Trump confirms Trump lost the debate. Expectations were low; all either candidate had to do was show up, speak in complete sentences, walk upright and use opposable thumbs. Biden pulled it off, Trump didn't.

Biden's campaign received almost $4 million in donations during the debate, which is apparerntly a record.

Just about everyone INCLUDING FOX NEWS, is blasting Turmp for not denouncing white surpremicists, and the group in particular that was mentioned is apparently adopting something he said as their slogan/motto.

Condoleeza Rice did an interview on CNN and called him the "Racist-In-Chief".

Amen. This is exactly the problem.

The message you get when you see the Democrat strategy is that they don't know what's going on. They keep expecting Trump and his sycophants to be "normal" somehow.

It's like they've just encountered the phenomenon. It's been 4 years (almost 5 if you count the Trump campaign's "serious" irruption). Is "shut up, man" the best you've got?

Marc, why are you so flustered and outraged at Biden, but you say nothing of Trump's white supremecy and voter suppression?

I know this isn't addressed to me but since Marc and I've been expressing similar points I'll take it.

Trump is the worst president in US history, from a practical point of view and an even much worse one from a moral one. We all know this, we've been saying it repeatedly in this very thread. Absolutely no one is defending him.

But, at some point, you have to accept this and move beyond that and elaborate some kind of plan for YOU (meaning the Dems) to beat him. Finger-wagging is not going to cut it, and neither is going down to his level (again, because that's the territory where he's better).

Today, the headlines are saying the debate was a national disgrace with two old white men trading insults while one of them was more natural and experienced at doing so.

For me, it's a losing scenario and it's frustrating since as I've also said already I'm not exactly confident on polls when it comes to this particular guy.

It's Hillary all over again. Of course she was "better" (meaning she said things that made sense and was much less of a terrible human being) than Trump on the debates (and much, much better than Biden).

But still, Trump successfully framed the campaign to the territory he was more comfortable in, a lot of people saw it that way, and he won.

Same trap, and the Democrats seem to fall for it every time.

Wallace did a terrible job in general losing control of the debate almost instantly. But also, and perhaps most importantly, in trying to reel Trump in he started debating him himself.

This, contrary to some of the takes I've been reading, did Biden no favors at all. The moderator was more effective and assertive at debating Trump (debating, not moderating) than the Democratic candidate.

Trump tweeted this image right after the debate and, conspiracy or not, it's a slam dunk. As an ad man I totally get that this was the synthesis a whole lot of people took from the whole debate, no matter what was actually being said.
