I am listening to "Unmasked" and I think it is the most underrated or underappreciated KISS album (compared to singles sales, touring support, etc).  I think the songs are awesome and catchy (I like some disco, maybe that helps).  A close second is Music from the Elder (which is my favorite KISS album), but I give the nod to Unmasked because it is a straight up KISS album with rock (rather than a concept album).

What do the KISS faithful think is the most underrated KISS album?

No objections if this deserves its own thread (and should be expanded to all bands).

I haven't seen a whole lot of love for REVENGE over the years, other than maybe 1 song.
I really like "Paralyzed" and "I Just Wanna". Lots of great guitar thru out the album. Plus there's an anthem, a ballad and a great Eric Carr solo.

REVENGE is a great effort. The 80's weren't my favorite time for KISS. Ace and Peter were gone, the make-up was off, hair metal was in. Gene was distracted by Hollywood. It had kind of become "Paul Stanley and Kiss"...

To me, it was a case of their old stuff definitely being better.

Then, REVENGE hits. Gene has stopped phoning it in. The band is tight, the songs are strong. "Unholy", "Spit", "Domino", and "I Just Wanna" are standouts. This sounds more like a direct "sequel" to CREATURES OF THE NIGHT than anything in-between the two.

Definitley my favorite "non-makeup-era" album.

The main issue with UNMASKED is not the songs (though, some are problematic), but the production. Thin and reedy with no bottom end. IF ONLY it sounded a like disco record....like DYNASTY...poppy, sure, but a well-rounded sound. Compare "Sure Know Something" to "Shandi", for instance.

I like UNMASKED a lot... if anything, it proves that no matter what type of music they tackled, Paul Stanley & Gene Simmons (and even Ace) have a seriously underrated knack for writing unique and catchy melodies for almost each and every one of their songs, something I almost never hear or read about, when KISS is discussed.

The problem is:  UNMASKED is not heavy metal, it's not hard rock, it's not even really disco... it's a straight-up, instantly-dated sounding late-'70s/early-'80s pop record.

It's decent... again, I love the melodies... but it's barely a KISS album.

In a lot of ways I think "Dressed To Kill" is underrated. People talk about "Rock and Roll All Nite" but there's a lot of interesting stuff on that record, especially from Gene ("She" and "Ladies in Waiting, especially.) KISS was still experimenting and hadn't settled into being a straight-up 70's rock act, there's still some folk in the songwriting and a lot of it is quirkier (in a good way) than what would come later. Pete was still laying down some unusual grooves; Paul was really discovering his knack for big hooks with songs like "Rock Bottom" and "Come On And Love Me." There's a lot of variety on this record, which they'd lose a bit as they became a bigger act and became a bit more one note.

I like Unmasked! I also love The Elder, as a concept
album, it`s a bit of a mess, but the songs are fine!

REVENGE also has Thou Shalt Not. One of my favorite non-makeup tunes.

At the time, REVENGE was seen as a return to form after the pop-metal 80s output. I actually think HITS was the beginning of this because most of it doesnít feel like the same cookie cutter pop pap of earlier albums. Sure, it has some tracks that fit that bill, but overall, I say itís a prelude to whatís to come with REVENGE.

UNMASKED is really nothing special. Other than Talk To Me, there are really no standout tracks. And if you ignore Australiaís fascination with Shandi, no real hits from it, either. ( I hate the song for what itís worth.)

THE ELDER holds some promise but the band really tried too hard. Too much of trying to make it be something theyíre not. KISS isnít some cerebral, philosophic band. They sing about fucking and having a good time. Now, thatís not to say they canít/ couldnít have tunes with an overall message or theme about some serious matter, but it has to be done right for them to pull it off. And they certainly arenít a band to try and bring an overall narrative and story arc to the public in album form. Theyíre just not that kind of band.

That said, I do enjoy most of the tracks on THE ELDER.

Overall UNMASKED is at the bottom of the pile for a reason and it receives all the accolades it deserves.

John, I totally agree about DTK. Look at all the goodness one there. She, Love Her All I Can ( both Wicked Lester carryovers), Rock Bottom, Címon and Love Me, RARAN... Itís an undeniable record. The only problem with it is production. Thatís what happens when the head of the label* decides to produce, I guess. With proper production, that album would be amongst the top of the lot.

* whose only real production experience is bubblegum pop.

Regarding The Elder, it`s KISS! Four fantasy characters,
with distinct personalities, there could have been a
decent storyline/concept with libretto etc to compliment
the songs, but in the end, it just seemed half arsed and
rushed.Such a wasted opportunity!

Paul`s voice is not good, maybe it was an `off`
night.Although he has struggled in the past when i`ve
seen them live.

Paul's voice has been completely gone for about five years now, maybe a bit more.

So... some of us have been waiting years for any (any!) KISS song to make an appearance in a Marvel Studios movie (Marvel did produce two comic book Super Specials in the '70s, after all, as well as a big appearance in "Howard the Duck")... and lo & behold, Ace Frehley was supposed to be notably name-dropped in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR...

...and it got cut!  ACK!!!
