Okay, now I want to know which monster John has as the lead singer.

Dracula was behind the microphone, the Wolfman was lead guitar, the Creature was on bass and the Mummy was the drummer.

That is really cool!

And on that spooky note, I do like the cover for CREATURES OF THE NIGHT:

I love the "Creatures" cover and I remember they used to run commercials for it pretty heavily on TV when the album was coming out. I'd listened to 'Dynasty' a lot when it came out but lost track of KISS for a couple years until I saw those commercials.

That album had a killer drum sound!

I wasn't keen on the album cover for LICK IT UP (too ordinary):

As I've already said, CRAZY NIGHTS is the only cover from the no makeup era I like. And it has nothing to do with the lack of makeup. It's all the designs. ANIMALIZE's cover looks like it took all of 30 seconds to come up with, and don't get me started on ASYLUM's cover.

ANIMALIZE is ordinary. And 30 seconds, Brian? Don't you mean 20 seconds? ;-)

These were the years when Gene was chasing a film
career, leaving Paul to helm the good ship Kiss, even
so, you`d think Paul would have vetoed such average
covers.

I don't like any of the non-makeup era covers either. I like the records well enough (at least Paul's songs) but not the designs. 'Asylum' is especially awful.

There's a certain comic-booky charm to ASYLUM:

Robbie, I was being generous about the ANIMALIZE cover. :)

What about CRAZY NIGHTS? Decent cover, but looks like a pop music cover:

I just regard it as another lazy cover.

KISS didn't really have an identity by the time 'Crazy Nights' came around. I can't criticize the album cover too much for not having one either.

(That being said, I really like 'Crazy Nights.')

The cover is better than the music inside.

What about HOT IN THE SHADE?

It's good, but feels like it should be an Iron Maiden cover rather than a KISS one!

An Iron Maiden cover circa the 80's without Derek Riggs
art...unthinkable!

:)

Since I'm doing a "tour" of the album covers, let me say that I am only mildly interested in the cover for REVENGE:

I like the 'Revenge' cover. It fits the tone of the album just right.

The only thing I like about 'Hot in the Shade' is the tour, where they went to a longer set with more older material.

CARNIVAL OF SOULS should have been a Pink Floyd cover:

I could see it as a Pink Floyd, ACDC (Bon Scott era) or Rush cover.
