Reading an article about a recently cancelled Marvel title, I came to this:

"The book went through several creative changes in its 17-month and two-volume run, with three writers and four artists in the 14 issues released so far."

Lets count the levels of wrong here.  First, in 17 months, they published 14 issues of the title.  Second, those fourteen issues constituted two volumes, meaning there were two #1's in there.  Third, there were three different writers on fourteen issues.  Fourth, there were fourdifferent artists in 14 issues.

And the article is written to try to explain why the book's sales dropped by 79% over the course of its run.  Gee...I wonder...

They did the two volume thing with the Silver Surfer, despite there being no change in the creative team or the direction they were going.I thought the title had been cancelled after it disappeared for a couple of months. But no, it came back with a new number 1 and pretty much carried on.

The idea is that those #1 issues attract the speculators that littered the comic buying landscape in the 90s. I don't know how many of them are left around, but obviously Marvel likes to think that they're still there, ready to buy a thousand copies of a new number one issue.

I don't know why they don't just bite the goddamned bullet and make EVERY new issue a #1. Not as if it's going to hurt sales all that much, I suspect...

Flicked through the latest Marvel previews yesterday...unappealing interior art(different artists to covers!),unappealing characters, unappealing stories and confusing continuity.
DC on the other hand at least had better(to my eyes) art, some interesting story ideas and the characters were`nt all female versions of the characters in the title book!

Wow Steve, that does seem a little disheartening!

Maybe the powers that be, got a little confused over the quote about each issue being someones first and thought it related to the creatives involved, rather than the audience!

Noooooo!

There's a back order comic company that operates here in the UK. They will send you out a brochure of their issues which is updated every now and again. If I want a #1 for a particular title, I have to endure many headaches to ensure I get the #1 I want.

How many #1 of WOLVERINE have there been in the last 15 years?

Why not abolish numbers, altogether, and just have a month and year on the cover? :/

Just seems pointless to have any sort of numbering system if they're just gonna do a new #1 every so often.

It makes eBay a pain. Want DEADPOOL #1? Try using that as a search term, given how many volumes of that character there have been?

May as well just abolish numbering and have January 2017 (etc, etc.) on the front.

Variant covers for almost every issue create a problem as well when you're searching Ebay.

That doesn't bother me so much as the content will be the same, but I sympathize if that is important.

If I look for ACTION COMICS #584 on eBay, it's pretty simple.

Now try and find DEADPOOL #1...

The only good stuff Marvel is currently publishing is probably their Star Wars comics. For some mysterious reason they hew very close to the movie characterizations (Disney *cough* Disney).

I think if they published them in mini/maxi series and titled as such...
like Amazing Spider-Man: Clone Saga, then it would be easy to know what the heck you're collecting.
