My GF and I are hosting a costume party for Halloween.  I have compiled a list of Halloween songs trying to balance the desire to do moody, atmospheric Halloween fare (think "Tubular Bells" or Carpenter's "Halloween" theme) versus the need to keep it "light" enough for a party setting ("Monster Mash", etal.)  My GF thinks the latter and I think she's probably right so I've leaned that way.

I have 2/3rds of a set but I need a good four hours of music and I'm not there.  Does anyone have suggestions to supplement the below?  Thanks.

Twin Peaks Theme (Angelo Badalamente)
Moon Over Bourbon Street (Sting)
Boris The Spider (The Who)
Moondance (Van Morrison)
White Rabbit (Jefferson Airplane)
Witch Doctor (David Seville)
Witchcraft (Sinatra)
The Time Warp (Rocky Horror Picture Show)
Mr. Sandman (The Chordettes)
Haunted House (Jumpin Gene Simnons)
Time (of the Season) (The Zombies)
Spooky (Classics IV)
House of the Rising Sun (The Animals)
Moon Shadow (Cat Stevens)
Spirit in the Sky (Norm Greenbaum)
Grim Grinning Ghosts (Thurl Ravenscroft)
Ghost County USA (Travesty LTD)
The Munster Theme
The Addams Family Theme
Superstition (Stevie Wonder)
Love Potion Number Nine (The Searchers)
Scooby Doo Theme
Twilight Zone Theme
Lions and Tigers and Bears Oh My (Wizard of Oz)
Psycho Killer (Talking Heads)
Sympathy for the Devil (Stones)
I Put a Spell On You (Screamin Jay Hawkins + Nina Simone)
Thriller (Michael Jackson)
Theme from Psycho
I'm in the Ground for Good (Newports)
Somebody's Watching Me (Rockwell)
Ghostbusters Theme
Coolest Little Monster (John Zacherle)
In the Air Tonight (Phil Collins)
Hell (Foo Fighters)
Witchy Woman (The Eagles)
Creature From the Black Lagoon (Dave Edmunds)
Season of the Witch (Donovan)
This is Halloween (Danny Elfman)
Bad Moon Rising (CCR)
Don't Fear the Reaper (Blue Oyster Cult)
Monster Mash (Bobby Pickett)
Werewolves of London (Warren Zevon)
Maneater (Hall and Oates)

Back in the days of vinyl, I would play my Dad's 78 of "Night on Bald Mountain." But at 33 1/3. Scary as heck!

BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA - Main Title Theme

BEETLEJUICE - Main Title Theme

IT FOLLOWS
DRACULA (Philip Glass)
THE SHINING
THE HOWLING
THE CONJURING
SALEM'S LOT

POLTERGEIST - End Credits

Hotel California - THE EAGLES

Helter Skelter - THE BEATLES

Witches Brew - HAP PALMER (You might be amazed how many people remember this one from their grade school days)

People are Strange (either Doors original or Echo & the Bunnymen cover)
Double Trouble by John Williams from Harry Potter & the Prisoner of Azkaban
In the same vein as the above, 'Prologue' from the first Potter film
The Purple People Eater by Sheb Wooley
Feed Me from the Little Shop of Horrors
Sweet Transvestite from the Rocky Horror Picture Show
Carmina Burana by Carl Orff
Sympathy for the Devil by the Rolling Stones
Danse Macabre by Saint-Saens
In the Hall of the Mountain King by Grieg
I Put a Spell on You by Screamin Jay Hawkins
Fire by Arthur Brown
Devil Woman by Cliff Richard

Thematically not in keeping, but sounds just like a Hallowe'en song: Rock Lobster by the B52s.

And if you want something really scary... The Amityville Horror theme by Lalo Schifrin. Eep!

Goblin -- Dawn of the Dead or Suspiria soundtracks. (Perhaps best in moderation; I once emptied my apartment of 40+ partygoers with 20 uninterrupted minutes of the DotD soundtrack.)

A randomized Ennio Morricone compilation like A Fistful of Film Music would be fun and probably mood appropriate.

Some more spooky-but-fun tracks to consider:

Although the films themselves are considered turkeys, you might want to go with Ennio Morricone's "Magic & Ecstasy," from EXORCIST II: THE HERETIC, and John Carpenter & Alan Howarth's "Silver Shamrock Commericial," from HALLOWEEN III: SEASON OF THE WITCH.

Funky & catchy, both!

Charley Daniels Band, "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" and "The Legend of Wooley Swamp."

"With Her Head Tucked Underneath Her Arm" in any version.
"Evil Woman" ELO
"Godzilla" Blue Oyster Cult

There's the Jeff Wayne musical version of "War of the Worlds," but it's the other Welles who made that a Halloween tradition.  "Thunderchild" is more for sitting and listening to, but "Spirit of Man" might get the question: "Who is that, and why is he wailing?" (It's Philip Lynott, and that's what he does.)

Some great ideas from all of you, thanks!

Many went dark, which is cool; I like the dark!  For this party we're going to stay more in the light of pop/rock, though.

In that vein, I've added:  Science Fiction Double Feature, Hotel California, Mad Monster Party, Evil Woman, Purple People Eater, Saint Saens (The Aquarium rather than Danse Macabre), Devil Went Down to Georgia, Black Magic Woman, Welcome to My Nightmare, and some more Songs From The Haunted Mansion.

For trick or treaters, though, I will definitely dive into some of the creepier fare like The Shining, Amityville Horror, etc...

Two weeks to finalize my list but I'm a lot closer now.  Keep 'em coming!

The aquarium by Saints-Saens is a wonderful choice, Rick.

Such an eerie piece. I'm sure it had a big influence on one Danny Elfman.

It has long been a favorite of mine, though it took your mentioning Saint Saens to prompt me to consider it for this setting, so thanks for that!  For me, it's a textbook example of the kind of ethereal and mysterious (rather than purely hammer and tongs scary) music we want for this party.

In all seriousness, there is a lot of Jewish music that would qualify as spooky. I am in particular thinking of one that is sung at the High Holidays - the Unetaneh Tokef. It is VERY Halloween in its tone and song (if not its lyrics - It translates in English to "Let us now relate the power of this day's holiness, for it is awesome and frightening. On it Your Kingship will be exalted; Your throne will be firmed with kindness and You will sit upon it in truth.")

Of course, if someone finds this offensive, you wouldn't want to do it. But if you check out music from the Jewish High Holidays, you may find quite a bit of suitable music. Jews like to write in minor keys.

Then again, I guess there's some church music that lends itself to minor keys too...
