There's some interesting speculation floating about viz a viz the superhero thing.  Apparently (and it makes sense) 'Doctor Mysterio' is the name of the show in Spanish.  Some folks are guessing that maybe the Doctor is the super-villain of the piece under that name.

Great. Now I have the vision of a masked Doctor hitting a 619 on a Cyberman in my head....

I still haven't watched last year's Xmas special. Still on my recordable box. Shows how (dis)interested I am, eh?

"Steven Moffat, Writer and Executive Producer, says: Ive always loved superheroes and this Christmas Doctor Who dives into that world. My favourite superhero is Clark Kent. Not Superman, Clark Kent."

Good grief. Be afraid; be very afraid.

Against my better judgment I preordered the Christmas special on Amazon. I doubt I'll be watching BBCA when it airs and I don't trust le DVR.

I wouldn't make too much out of that one. I will often use the secret  identity and Superhero name interchangeable.  I'll say Peter Parker when I mean Spider-Man and vice versa.  Sometimes in conversation I might just say the first name. In some cases as with my kid's mother. She respond with Peter who?  Or who the hell is Clark? I don't know anyone named Clark.

"Not Superman, Clark Kent."

Doesn't sound much like using the names interchangeably.

Bottom line, in any case, is that I do not trust Moffat AT ALL. I would not be in the least bit surprised if this "superhero" reveals himself to be River Song.

I really wish you hadn't written that JB. You have a habit of making things happen :)

I don't get why people keep casting Matt Lucas.

And indeed we did. Several longing lovely shots of JB's Superman comic. As well as a few glimpses of his Hulk and Wolverine too I think.

So, JB how does it feel to be canonized as part of the DW universe?

As a fan of both Who and JB it was quite thrilling for me. :)

It's very strange to find myself part of a fictional universe. Like when Joey was reading GENERATIONS on FRIENDS, or NEXT MEN showed up on BIG BANG THEORY.

Trivia question for the forum: does any one know the first appearance of Mister Byrne's artwork in a motion picture? (okay, the first time I saw his artwork anyway!)

(Hint: the movie came out in 1979)

Even though I've seen all of Friends and BBT I don't remember those appearances! Will have to track them down and re-watch!

Just got the IDW Star Trek collection and whilst enjoying it (it's a gorgeous book) was casually wishing for JB DW strip. And then the Superman pages popped up on Who:) Still, to my mind, the definitive take on the character. Obviously, someone in the Cardiff production office thinks the same:)

I can live with the Christmas episode being a bit cheesy (I've come to
expect it at this point), but did they have to invoke the Doctor mourning
River Song? At least Twelve is just evasive about talking about his
feelings. If it was Ten, he'd be all mopey.

I was torn.  On one hand, yeah, they need to move on from River Song.  On the other hand, at least it wasn't more whining about Clara.

On the whole though, despite Moffett's comments in interviews, I thought it was a pretty loving tribute to Chris Reeve era Superman.

Was the pages shown from Action Comics or Superman?  And could someone tell be what issue it was?  Those panels looked great.

OMG! How I wish I could CUT OUT that River Song reference and
keep an otherwise perfectly fun Xmas special!

ARE SPOILERS OK?

The Ghost's origin plays as a near-perfect update for Captain
Marvel...That was my favorite part.

Nothing Moffatt says about the Doctor or super-heroes in the "making
of" segment kade any sense to me. Pretty clear now that any fun to be
derived from the show happens in spite of his efforts.

As heartwarming as it was to see our illustrious host's artwork on display, I'm afraid the actual episode itself didn't appeal to me as a Doctor Who fan or a comics fan. For most of the story I felt like I was watching a soppy romcom...but I suppose that's what Doctor Who is now - Harry Potter meets Love Actually.

I agree it wasn't a great episode. I've re-watched all the Xmas episodes over the last week and my favourite (suprisingly to me) was Moffat's first, A Christmas Carol. But I did think it was a good homage to the Reeves Superman movies...whether that's a good thing or a bad thing is personal judgement.

I was a bit shocked about the River reference as I thought he was still missing Clara. In my mind, the latter is a lot more important to him - and to me!
