The result was GENESIS (DC chickened out on GODWAVE as the
title), and it was a ripe ol' mess. Too many cooks, all of whom were
trying to create an entirely different meal.
---
On a positive note, we did get some great covers from Alan Davis!
I had stopped reading both DC and Marvel comics, but heard good
things about what the team of Javier Rodriguez and Dennis Hopeless
were doing with SPIDER-WOMAN, so gave that book a shot.
Surprisingly, I liked it! Unfortunately, due to crossovers/tie-ins, the
most recent issue will likely be my last.

If I were running the show (which I doubt I'd do very well), the only 'crossover' I would ask for, once every 4-5 years, is as follows: each month, every book would be required to do villain cross-pollination. Not as part of an event, no requirement to read all the titles, just fresh encounters in each book, every tale being read on its own merits.
So, not really a crossover, I guess, but it'd be my editorial decision. So I'd ask the X-books to do an X-Men/Dr. Octopus battle; I might ask the Spider-Man titles to give us a Spider-Man/Mr Sinister battle; and then I'd ask for other titles to give us something like Iron Man VS Juggernaut and Hulk VS Sinister Six.

For the last decade or so Marvel's events seem to start
with the idea of "LET'S KILL SOMEONE
======
The latest Marvel event currently going on just brought
it's death toll up by killing a character that's been
around since the beginning. Easy to do when the character's
alter-ego has been taken over by a replacement.

Killing a major character has become the way companies say, "This matters! Look how important it is--we're KILLING someone!"
Sheesh.
My prediction: this death will be undone in the course of this miniseries/event, because Iron Man is still switching hands (to two people) and Clint's not going to be the star of the HAWKEYE title. Both deaths were "foreseen" by Ulysses...

When DC killed Superman, almost everybody bought into it. People who'd been reading comics for decades bought into it. The media bought into it. And thus a big flashing sign went up: PEOPLE ARE STUPID. Fans who used to respond to death with "He'll be back!" race to buy multiple copies of these potentially "valuable" comics. After all, it might be REAL this time.

It's true. Readers seem to think "this time for sure!", much like Bullwinkle pulling a rabbit out of his hat. We should all know by now that death is rarely for keeps.
Given the huge investment that companies have in these characters--especially primary characters--publishers can't afford to have them stay dead. Thus death will always be a temporary problem instead of a permanent farewell. And yet readers still buy into the idea that "no, man, they wouldn't bait and switch us like that again."
Though it's odd to note that Jean Grey has been dead in the comics now for quite a bit longer than she was post "Dark Phoenix." Going to have to rest in peace a lot longer to top Bucky or Uncle Ben, though. Some deaths seem to last a while... ;)

As for company wide crossovers, they have become so common and indeed predictable that they should be cut back sharply. Maybe declare a moratorium on them for a year or two, just to cleanse the readership's palate entirely.
They're big, loud and unnecessary. They also make for great jumping-off points for readers who weary of sturm und drang.

Not a bad idea, Andrew.
I think many are feeling burnt out. And it's not just about burnout. I rarely, if ever, read any DC/Marvel stuff now, but the point is, I don't feel I can jump back on board. I could go months without reading a particular title as a kid and jump back on board, no problem. Everything was recognizable, I hadn't missed much, didn't need to catch up, etc.
I did think about picking up some DC titles recently, but with "Rebirth" plastered all over every title, and yet another reboot, I found it impenetrable.

You know, of course, if Marvel's sales slump, the first thing they're going to do is say "What big crossover event can we do to get the readers back?"

Remember in "Blackest Night" when the bad guy gained the power to control not only every character who was dead at that time, but also everyone who had ever been dead and came back? Which meant just about everyone?
