Remember when comics and related merchandise used to be about the characters and the content of the book? Over the last 30 years comics have become more about selling the creators and not the characters and content. Now it has been taken to the next and (IMO) most ridiculous level with comic book creator collector cards.

Yeah! No one would have dared to make something like this thirty years ago!

I actually don't see a problem with this. Creators are important and I'm happy for them to be honoured.

They aren't more important than the characters but they are important.

My takeaway from the set Andrew posted? Bill Everett
actually kinda looks like the Sub-Mariner!

That Todd McFarlane card from the 90's creator card set that Andrew posted a link to. Ahahaha! Why would they pick that image for the card? Tom Yeates is also shirtless, but at least he isn't swinging a baseball bat.

None of these guys are my comic creator heroes, but they're sure to be somebody else's.

It's too late. Which of these is the more likely scenario today?

1) "I want to buy that book because Frank Miller wrote it" or "I want that book because Andy Kubert drew it."

2) "I want that new Legion of Super-Heroes book" or "I've loved the Fantastic Four so long, and I want to keep reading their stories."

I think we know. If Alan Moore and Alex Ross did a "Willie Lumpkin" comic, it would sell in droves. And their talent surely deserves recognition - but in the end, the comics should be selling the comics.

Putting the creators above the creations obviates the creations. Might as well just buy sketchbooks and practice drawings... What? What's that you say? Oy...

N.B. This is in no way intended to denigrate Messrs. Miller, Kubert, Moore, or Ross. They're just the ones that came to mind first.

I'm confused about the outrage. While there are a couple of writers and
artists in that set that only work on Marvel and/or DC, the majority of
those creators on the cards do independent creator-owned work. I'm a
big fan of Brian K Vaughan, for example, and I followed him from Y:
THE LAST MAN to SAGA to PAPER GIRLS. How is that different from
following any author? Do you bitch and moan that Stephen King's name
is used to sell books instead of The Gunslinger or Tom Clancy is
promoted over Jack Ryan?

Andrew, I don't remember those creator trading cards from the 90's. I guess the 90's are truly back. In any case, my point still stands that the industry has become mostly about selling the creators over the characters and content.

If Marvel or DC had put out this set, I might be able to see your point.
But what's the issue with selling the creators of creator-owned books?

I'd tend to side with Michael.

Consider this:

You have an author's name being used as a brand as big as the book title -- and he didn't even write the book.

I find it hard to get worked up over a marginal product like these collector cards.

If a writer's name gets bigger on the title than 'The Amazing Spider-Man' I will be duly concerned, but we're not there yet.
