I haven't really looked at this for awhile (buried in a longbox somewhere), but, yep. One of the best. And I've gotta say: those Giordano inks are damn good.

There are a handful of titles that I consider definitive takes on Superman. MAN OF STEEL is on that very short list, and the final splash page of MOS #1 ranks as one of the very best depictions of Superman ever.

JB's MAN OF STEEL is one of the few versions in comics I enjoy to this day.
Glad the animated show took a lot of elements from that version as well.

About the inks by Giordano: JB, correct me if I'm wrong, but I recall that it was actually inked mostly, if not entirely, by Giordano's assistants. Uncredited, of course.

Yes, it was mostly what we used to call Dick Art. Dick had promised me he'd do it all himself, but in his mind doing it all himself apparently meant giving most of it to Frank McLaughlin.

This may not be the best example, but I particularly liked the interaction between the characters and the facial expressions during key exchanges. Would LOVE to see an Artist's Edition of this series!!
As many have noted, this is a cool updated set-up for Luthor's hatred for Superman. Timeless.

I liked the reasoning between Superman and Luthor's opposition.
With all due respect to the original canon, and I try not to judge things by modern standards, even as a kid I was not keen on the fact Luthor had developed a grudge because he became bald AFTER Superboy had saved his life. I'd accept baldness over anything else.
Was there more to his hatred than the baldness? I can't remember as it was a while since I read that tale, but the MOS reason works better for me.

In the original story, which I read in first publication (!) young Luthor had actually created LIFE in his lad on the outskirts of Smallville. When a fire broke out, Superboy came to the rescue but Luthor lost his hair, and his organism was destroyed. Luthor blamed Superboy, saying the Boy of Steel was JEALOUS of Luthor's brilliance. Maybe he even started the fire!
