I'll admit to engaging in a bit of hyperbole with the thread title, but more and
more comics seem to have logos that are made up of plain fonts (usually in
white) instead of the more colorful, distinctive lettering that is more often
associated with funny books.

Do you guys think this trend of "plain" lettering makes the covers more or less
appealing?

A logo isn't a logo if it's a "plain font": that's typing.

A logo is made up of (amongst other things) letters/words/text that has been altered from the original font to make it distinctive.

And this trend isn't hitting just comics: think of the new Microsoft logo, that has gone from using Helvetica Extra Bold Oblique with a distinctive cut between the O and S to someone's typing of the name. (The connection of the F and T is a ligature, common in good typesetting and not something distinctive to this "logo.")

(And to answer your question: I'm against it and it makes the covers less appealing...)

Really? I feel that for the most part, these covers are missing something… but they're not all that bad…

… and I really loved the cover text/designs from 60's and 70's Marvel… maybe it was the hand-drawn feel of them… I feel it's really under appreciated.

*****

Less. An occasional "plain" lettering logo would stand out because it was different and rare but "plain" would be pretty dull for the norm.

Just looking at that collage depresses me.

Although I am reading Daredevil again. Ron Garney's art is a thing to behold.

Any examples of these "plain font" logos?

The following titles shown in Charles' post all look "plain" to me.

CAPTAIN MARVEL
IRON MAN
OLD-MAN LOGAN
INHUMANS
POE DAMERON
BLACK PANTHER

I know that CAPTAIN AMERICA logo is older than the one I shown on the book I
posted, but I prefer the red, white and blue version. (Just to be clear… The
eight covers I posted above feature logos I like.)

Here are a few more samples of what I mean by "plain."

They probably aren't as prevalent as it feels like they are to me.
