They were trying to build up something between the blind "at one with
The Force" guy and the long-haired guy who shot really well; when the
blind guy died it came as close to touching me as anything in the movie
because I felt the other guys' sense of loss. However, I'd never really
observed such a close relationship between them until that moment.
So while the scene was well acted and more touching than most, it felt
a bit out of left field. Maybe I missed their connection earlier. -----They
were both Guardians of the Kyber Temple. According to Chirrut, Baze
was once one of the most devoted members of their order, but he had
become disillusioned after the Imperial occupation. So Baze repeating
Chirrut's mantra after the latter's death was a reaffirmation of his faith.

The line about Baze's disillusionment sounds familiar, but I never really observed any disillusionment from him during the movie, so that payoff, which was competently filmed and acted, was less powerful than it should have been.  Again, the weakness of discussing stuff rather than showing it rears it's head.

Baze was continually dismissing and mocking his friend's faith
throughout the movie. I think they showed enough to get the point
across.

Saw it a third and final time in theater this afternoon, using up points for a "Dolby Cinema" experience (heck of a lot better than the previous IMAX 3D and Standard showings). Concentrated more on enjoying the visuals this time out.

The only new thing I spotted was a fleeting glimpse of what appeared to be the Imperial Probe Droid from EMPIRE in the Jedha city scenes (after the Dr. Evazan & Ponda Baba encounter, which would be better off left out of the movie).

RO also makes that "first victory against the Evil Galactic Empire" in the 1977 opening crawl a very costly one for the Alliance, with Vader taking out a majority of the Fleet capital ships and capturing the Rebel flagship with the transmitted plans...

...Followed by the capture of the Tantive IV, and destruction of Alderaan.

And... Darn you, Matthew Wilkie!

That scene with the old Death Star engineers on Eadu...

...Had a bit of trouble keeping the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang parallel out of my head.

Saw it for a second time a couple of days ago. Man, the Ghost is all over the final battle, appearing in four or five quick shots. Will be interesting to see who was actually on that ship when REBELS gets to this. I cannot imagine Ezra and Kanan are around at that point, especially based on the Bail Organa/Mon Mothma exchange

I still say Ezra and Kanan were sent to Alderaan to await the arrival of
Obi-Wan. At least we know Hera and Chopper are still around.

Yesterday's REBELS tied in rather strongly to ROGUE ONE, and even brought in Forest Whittaker to voice Saw Gerrera.

They paged General Sedulla in Rogue One and Chopper made a quick appearance at the Rebel base, as well.

Chopper's awesome.

I'd rather sit through the boring first 30 minutes of RO again than try to make it through 15 minutes of those three guys and their passive-aggressive sarcasm.  I skimmed through a few minutes and it was exhausting.

Dave Filoni confirmed that the General Syndulla being paged was
Hera, not her father Cham.

I never thought it was anyone other than Hera.

The Ghost was also on Yavin IV earlier in the film. I loved seeing that ship.

Yeah, I dig the design. Sort of a cross between the Millennium Falcon and the Narcissus, from ALIEN. Nice to see it in live-action. Well...more realistic CGI, at least.

So Disney is talking with Carrie Fisher's estate over her continued use in the Star Wars films. I don't think it's an issue with episode 8. Her scenes have been all filmed. It would be episode 9 I'd imagine they'd be discussing. Since it has been mentioned that Leia has a few scenes in the film.

What are your thoughts on this?

I have heard that she was to have a significant role in IX. So I am imagining some serious rewrites will have to happen.  I do believe that any use will be respectful to Carrie Fisher and the role of Princess Leia. I'm okay with the use a this point if they can work things out.

From what I've read -- and it seems to be rumor more than spoilers -- Leia was indeed meant to have a bigger role in IX, as well as her reunion with Luke.  If the later is true, that Carrie and Mark filmed no scenes together for XIII, that will be a huge disappointment.

All of that aside, it's obvious that CGI is going to be needed for Leia; I guess the only question is how much.  Do they wrap up Leia's story quickly, or use the character fully?

Or maybe get Stevie Nicks? (kidding, of course; no one can replace Carrie)

I would be against the idea of using CGI to create new footage of Leia for the ongoing sequels. They have their footage in the can for the next sequel. The idea of doing some kind of reunion between Luke and a CGI Leia is hollow and awful. They could have done a proper reunion in TFA, but they wanted to string it out for the extra bucks that might offer in the future, now they have to live with that decision.

I'm assuming that episode IX has already been somewhat planned out. So I wouldn't mind a cgi Leia in a limited capacity. I want the studio to end Leia's role in the story.  A spectacularly heroic death scene worthy of the character and a respectful tribute to Carrie Fisher.

Lucasfilm just issued a statement concerning the rumors of a cgi Leia.

That's pretty cool of them.

That's a surprisingly definitive statement.  I neither expected nor wanted a full Fisher 'performance' a la Peter Cushing in RO, but figured there would be some CG moments to supplement whatever footage exists of Leia for XIII in order to give her some kind of exit or closure.  I guess they figure whatever footage they have can be worked as some kind of character finale.

Bottom line: there was no good outcome here.  CGI or no CGI; kill the character or write her out -- it all sucks.

I enjoyed the CGI Tarkin performances, but I reacted to the CGI Princess Leia with mixed emotions. I was impressed that they almost pulled off a recreation of Leia. But it felt morbid. I am OK with Tarkin but not with Leia because Fisher's death is recent. I know that's irrational, but that's just how I feel.
