You know, for the ~35ish years before I arrived on this forum, I thought JB's "new" Fantastic Four uniforms were dark blue and white, and rather chastised myself on finding out otherwise.  Then I find old covers like the below, and realize (when comparing to The Captain) that it wasn't just me....

Ah! The old blue/black bugaboo! I thought the same thing, Steve. I really wish they had been coloured a solid black with no blue highlights, like John's Doom Patrol costumes. Those would have been very striking.

I'll always "read" those uniforms as dark blue, and on the cover image with The Captain, whose costume seems intended to be black, I can't see them being anything but dark blue.

As a kid, I always thought they were a dark navy, but then I can barely tell the difference between my navy and black socks.

The Captain's costume is white, then?

I saw them as dark blue, as well.  Still do.  Loved those costumes.

"The Captain's costume is white, then?"

Nope, its black, and Superman has black hair.  One thing does not automatically equate to something else in the mind of a child. I think most of around here have heard the argument about coloring. You made the costumes, you say they are black, so obviously they are black. But if I were to describe the costumes to someone, I would have to consciously describe them as black because they don't "look" black.  Our brains and the real world around us doesn't always allow for an exact translation to occur. Its one of the reasons I have always found optical illusions so fascinating. If I put this design in front of my nine year old, he would steadfastly adhere to his view that the costumes are blue, even if I told him they were black.

It amazes me that people can read comics for years and years and years and somehow not grasp the simplest conventions!

That might be one of the weirdest Avengers line-ups ever.

Which is probably why it lasted all of four-and-a-half issues.  Reed and Sue left after Avengers #304, the Captain was back in his Captain America garb in #301, Thor stayed with the team for a while, and Gilgamesh was sidelined within a year.

In real life, I once bought a Navy surplus jacket that looked black to me. Then, when I got home, I had an argument with my dad who insisted my jacket was Navy blue.

I think of that when this topic comes up. There really are shades of "black" that reflect different highlights.
